GAUGE: 14 scs and 14 rows = 4 inches.

DIRECTIONS:

INSIDE OF JACK-O’-LANTERN:

  1. Rnd 1: With orange, ch 4, work 11 dcs in fourth ch from hk, join with sl st in top of beg ch-4: count 12 dcs, counting beg-ch as first dc here and throughout.
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same sp as joining; work 2 dcs in each dc around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 24 dcs.
  3. Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same sp as joining, dc in next dc; * work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in next dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 36 dcs.
  4. Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same sp as joining, dc in each of next 2 dcs; * work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in each of next 2 dcs; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 48 dcs.
  5. Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in same sp as joining, dc in each of next 3 dcs; * work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in each of next 3 dcs; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 60 dcs.
  6. Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in front lp only of each dc around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 60 dcs.

OUTSIDE OF JACK-O’-LANTERN: Bottom/ Side Pieces (Make 4):

  1. Row 1: With orange, ch 2, sc in second ch from hk: count 1 sc.
  2. Row 2: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in sc: count 2 scs.
  3. Row 3: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in each sc: count 4 scs.
  4. Rows 4-8: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first sc, sc in each sc until one remains, work 2 scs in last sc: count two additional scs at the end of each new row: count 14 scs at end of Row 8.
  5. Rows 9-13: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across: count 14 scs.
  6. Rows 14-37: Ch 1, turn; sc in each of first 2 sts, hdc in each st until two remain, sc in each of last 2 sts: count 14 sts at the end of each row. Fasten off at end of Row 37.
  7. Place all four sections on a flat surface with the points (Row 1) touching in the center.
  8. With matching yarn and tapestry needle, sew sections together along edges of Rows 1-8 to form the bottom of pumpkin. The loose ends plus the insets that follow will form the sides.

Inset (Make 4):

  1. I-Rows 1-3: Repeat Rows 1-3 of Bottom/Side pieces.
  2. I-Row 4: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first sc, sc in each sc until one remains, work 2 scs in last sc: count 6 scs.
  3. I-Rows 5-8: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first st, hdc in each sc until one remains, work 2 scs in last st: count two additional sts at the end of each new row: count 14 sts at end of I-Row 8.
  4. I-Rows 9-27: Ch 1, turn; sc in each of first 2 sts, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc in each of last 2 sts. Fasten off at end of I-Row 27.
  5. With matching yarn and tapestry needle, sew inset sections between side sections, sewing along outside edges and making sure final rows of the bottom and inset match.
  6. Container assembly: Place plastic container inside crocheted jack-o’-lantern. Place crocheted inside piece into plastic container. Stuff lightly between plastic container and crocheted outside of jack-o’-lantern to shape pumpkin.
  7. Thread tapestry needle with matching yarn. Sew top edge of inside piece to top edge of outside piece, distributing fullness of outside piece evenly around.

LID: Underside (Make 1):

  1. L-Rnds 1-5: Rep Rnds 1-5 of Inside of Jack-o’-Lantern.
  2. L-Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in same sp and in each of next 4 dcs; * work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in each of next 4 dcs; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 72 dcs.
  3. L-Rnd 7: Ch 3, dc in same sp and in each of next 5 dcs; * work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in each of next 5 dcs; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 84 dcs. Fasten off.

Top (Make 8):

  1. T-Rows 1-2: Repeat Rows 1-2 of Bottom/Side pieces.
  2. T-Row 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc: count 2 scs.
  3. T-Row 4: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in each of next 2 scs: count 4 scs.
  4. T-Row 5: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc.
  5. T-Row 6: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first sc, sc in each of next 2 scs, work 2 scs in last sc: count 6 scs.
  6. T-Row 7: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc.
  7. T-Rows 8-11: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first st, hdc in each st until one remains, work 2 scs in last st: count two additional sts at the end of each new row: count 14 sts at end of T-Row 11.
  8. T-Rows 12-17: Ch 1, turn; sc in each of first 2 sts, hdc in each st until two remain, sc in each of last 2 sts: count 14 sts at end of each row. Fasten off at the end of T-Row 17.
  9. With matching yarn and tapestry needle, sew all sections together along ends of rows to make top as shown in photo.

Lid assembly:

  • Center crocheted underside on top of plastic lid. With matching yarn and tapestry needle, tack crocheted underside to center of plastic lid. (The plastic lid will be encased between the underside and top pieces, with the inside of the lid facing up.)
  • Center crocheted top right side up on top of wrong side of plastic lid so last two rows extend beyond the lid. With matching yarn, tack edge of crocheted underside to edge of crocheted top at each seam, leaving open between seams. Lightly stuff each section; then sew the underside to T-Row 15 all around, encasing the plastic lid.

STEM:

  1. S-Rnd 1: Ch 4, work 11 dcs in fourth ch from hk, join with sl st in top of beg ch-4: count 12 dcs.
  2. S-Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in back lp of each st, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 12 dcs.
  3. S-Rnds 3-9: Ch 3, dc around post of next dc (see Fig. 1); * dc in next dc, dc around post of next dc; rep from * around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 12 dcs.
  4. S-Rnd 10: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc around post of next dc; * work 2 dcs in next st, dc around post of next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 18 dcs. Fasten off. Stuff lightly. With matching yarn and tapestry needle, sew stem to lid at center top.

EYES AND NOSE (Make 3):

  1. E-Row 1: With black, ch 4, work 2 dcs in fourth ch from hk: count 2 dcs.
  2. E-Row 2: Ch 3, turn, dc in same sp, dc in next st, work 2 dcs in last st: count 4 dcs. Fasten off.

MOUTH: M-Row 1: With black, ch 21, sl st in second ch from hk, sc in each of next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 5 chs, ch 2, sl st in each of next 3 chs, ch 2, dc in each of next 3 chs, hdc in each of next 2 chs, sc in each of next 2 chs, sl st in last ch. Fasten off.

FINISHING: With matching yarn and tapestry needle, sew eyes, nose and mouth to outside as shown in photo.

FINISHED SIZE: Jack-o’-lantern is about 12 inches high x 9-1/2 inches wide.
