Instructions

GAUGE: With a size H hk, 13 dcs and 9 rnds = 4 inches. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Techniques/stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

  • Join with a sc: With a slip knot on hk, insert hk in the sp or st indicated in instructions and make 1 sc.
  • Reverse sc: * Sc in next st to the right (the one behind instead of ahead of last st); rep from * around.

DIRECTIONS: Before you begin, refer to gauge, techniques/stitches used, etc.

  1. For the red portion of the stocking only, st in the space between (bet) 2 sts  rather than in each st unless instructions say otherwise. This will eliminate the ridge that normally forms when stitching back and forth in rnds or rows.
  2. STOCKING: Rnd 1 (WS): With Cherry Red and H hk, ch 4; work 7 dcs in fourth ch from hk; sl st in top of beg ch: count 8 dcs, including the beg ch. (This piece will have a bowl shape. If needed, push the inside of the piece so it points away from you.)
  3. Rnd 2: Turn (on red portion of stocking, always turn work so the strand of yarn is behind the lp on hk), sc in same st as sl st, ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc bet this and next st; * dc in next st, dc bet this and next st; rep from * around, ending with a sl st in top of beg ch-2: count 16 dcs.
  4. Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2: count 32 dcs.
  5. Rnd 4: Turn, sc bet first 2 sts, ch 2 (counts as first dc); * dc bet next 2 sts; rep from * around, ending with a sl st in top of beg ch-2: count 32 dcs.
  6. Rnds 5-16: Rep Rnd 4. (The outside of the stocking should be facing as you work Rnd 16. If the inside is facing, check your work. If you’ve forgotten to turn your work at the beg of a rnd, rip back to the error and correct it. If no errors are found, the stocking just needs to be turned inside out.)
  7. Heel Row A: Do not turn. Sl st in next 2 sts.
  8. Heel Row B: Ch 1, turn; sc bet next sts of Rnd 16, hdc bet next sts of Rnd 16, dc bet next sts of Rnd 16, hdc bet next sts of Rnd 16, sc bet next sts of Rnd 16, sl st bet next sts of Rnd 16.
  9. Heel Row C: Ch 1, turn; sk first st, sc in next st, hdc bet next sts, [dc bet sts] two times, hdc in next st, sc in same sp as sl st of previous row, sl st bet next sts of Rnd 16.
  10. Heel Row D: Ch 1, turn; sk first st, sc in next st, hdc bet next sts, [dc bet sts] three times, hdc in next st, sc in same sp as sl st of previous row, sl st bet next sts of Rnd 16.
  11. Heel Row E: Ch 1, turn; sk first st, sc in next st, hdc bet next sts, [dc bet sts] four times, hdc in next st, sc in same sp as sl st of previous row, sl st bet next sts of Rnd 16.

  14. Rnd 17: Ch 1, turn; sl st in first 5 sts to reach center of heel, sc bet next sts, ch 2, [dc bet sts of heel] four times, dc in last st of heel, dc in same sp as sl st of previous row, dc bet sts of Rnd 16 until opposite side of heel is reached, dc in same sp as sl st of previous row, [dc bet sts of Heel Row G] four times, sl st in top of beg ch-2: count 32 dcs.
  15. Rnds 18-20: Rep Rnd 4: count 32 dcs. (The outside of the stocking should be facing as you work Rnd 20.)

  19. CUFF: C-Rnd 1: With inside of stocking facing and size H hk, join White with a sc in center back st of Rnd 32; * dc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * around. (Mark last st with a safety pin, then move the pin to the last st of each new rnd as you work.)
  20. C-Rnds 2-11: Do not turn; dc in each sc and sc in each dc around.

Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch-long tail for sewing. Weave in the shorter yarn tail at beg ch.
  24. Fold cuff down at C-Rnd 3. Fold the hanging loop over the stocking at center back so the end with the 12-inch tail is on the inside and the opposite end is on the outside. Align the ends so each is 2-1/2 inches from top of stocking and pin in place.

  29. B-Rnds 2-3: Sc in each st around. At end of B-Rnd 3, sl st in next st. Cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch-long tail for sewing. (If berry turns wrong side out, use the blunt end of hk to turn it right side out.)
  30. Roll up the yarn tail at beg of berry and stuff yarn tail inside. Thread needle with remaining yarn tail and sew in and out of front loops around top of berry; pull tight and secure yarn. Do not cut yarn. It will be used to sew the berry to the leaves.
