CROCHETED FOOTBALL HELMET
HELPFUL ABBREVIATIONS GUIDE
ch(s) = chain(s)
dc(s) = double crochet(s)

[ ] = Instructions within brackets are repeated as directed.
GAUGE:
- Use size F/5 hook for newborn-size, size H/8 hook for 6-12 month-size and size J hook for toddler-size hat. Slight variation in gauge will change the finished size a bit.
SIDE (make 2):
- Round 1 (RS): With MC ch 4, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring, ch 3 for first dc, work 11 dcs in ring, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 12 dcs.
- Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 1 dc in same st, working in back loops only, work 2 dcs in each st around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 24 dcs.
- Round 3: Ch 3, working in back loops only, work 2 dcs in next dc, [work 1 dc in next dc, work 2 dcs in next dc] around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3, turn: 36 dcs.
- Row 1: Ch 3, working in both loops, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dcs, [work 2 dcs in next dc, work 1 dc in next 2 dcs] across, leaving 15 dcs in Round 3 unworked, turn: 27 dcs.
- Row 2: Ch 3, [work 1 dc in each of the next 5 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc] four times, work 1 dc in last dc and in top of ch-3, turn: 31 dcs.
- Row 3: Ch 3, [work 1 dc in each of the next 5 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc] across to ch-3, work 1 dc in top of ch-3, turn: 35 dcs.
- Row 4: Ch 3, work 2 dcs in next dc, work 1 dc in each dc across to last two sts, work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in top of ch-3: 37 dcs. Fasten off.
- Row 5: Join white or CC at end of Row 4, ch 1, work 1 sc in each st across row: 37 scs. Fasten off white.
- Row 6: Join CC at end of Row 5 if white was used in Row 5, ch 3, work 2 dcs in next sc, work 1 dc in each st across to last st, work 2 dcs in last st: 39 dcs. Fasten off.
- Repeat to make another side.
- Place hat sides together with RS facing and long edges of Row 6 matching. Sl st back lps only of Row 6 together. Fasten off.
- Weave in all loose ends.
STRAP:
- Row 1: With white, ch 31 or number needed for length of strap desired, work 1 sc in second ch from hk and in each remaining ch across, turn.
- Row 2-3: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each ch across, turn. Fasten off at end of Row 3.
- Weave in loose ends.
FINISHING:
- With white yarn, hand-sew one end of strap to RS of Round 3 on outside of one side of hat.
- With white thread, hand- or machine-sew loop side of hook-and-loop tape to opposite end of strap.
- In the same way, sew hook side of hook-and-loop tape to opposite side of hat.
Finished Size: Newborn-size hat has a 16-inch circumference; 6-12 month-size hat has an 18-inch circumference; toddler-size hat has a 20-inch circumference.

KNIT BOOTIES
HELPFUL ABBREVIATION GUIDE
Ch = chain

GAUGE:
- Working in St st (k one row, p one row) 6 sts and 8 rows = 1 inch. Slight variation in gauge will change the finished size a bit.
SPECIAL TECHNIQUES:
- Inc: Increase: Knit in the front and back of stitch.
- SSK: Slip, slip, knit: Slip the next two stitches one at a time as if you were knitting. Insert left needle from left to right through the slipped stitches and knit.
- SSP: Slip, slip, purl: Slip the next two stitches one at a time as if you were knitting. Return the stitches to the left needle, keeping them twisted. Purl the two twisted stitches together through the back loops.
- K 2, p 2 rib: Row 1: [K 2, p 2] across row.
- All remaining rows: Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches across row.
BOOTIE (MAKE 2):
- With white, cast on 43 sts.
- Rows 1-5: K across each row: 43 sts. Fasten off white at end of Row 5.
- Row 6: With MC, k 18, K2tog, place marker, k 3, place marker, SSK, k 18: 41 sts.
- Row 7: P 17, SSP, k 3 sts between markers, P2tog, p 17: 39 sts.
- Row 8: K until 2 sts remain before first marker, K2tog, k 3, SSK, k to end of row.
- Row 9: P until 2 sts remain before first marker, SSP, k 3, P2tog, p to end of row.
- Rows 10-13: Repeat Rows 8 and 9 until 12 sts remain on left and right sides of markers: 27 sts at end of Row 13.
- Row 14: K 8, inc 1 st in each of next 3 sts, k 2, inc 1 st in center st between markers, k 2, inc 1 in each of next 3 sts, k 8: 34 sts. Fasten off.
CUFF:
- With CC, work 3 in. of k 2, p 2 rib. Bind off loosely in pattern. Fasten off.
SOLE:
- With white, cast on 6 sts.
- Rows 1-2: K across row: 6 sts.
- Row 3: K 1 inc 1, k across to last st, k 1 inc 1: 8 sts.
- Rows 4-24: K across each row: 8 sts.
- Row 25: K2tog, k across row to last 2 sts, k2tog: 6 sts.
- Bind off, leaving last st on needle. Do not fasten off.
- Insert crochet hk in lp of last st, ch 1, sc evenly around entire sole, join with a sl st in beginning sc. Fasten off.
- Repeat to make a second bootie.Weave in all loose ends.
ASSEMBLY:
- Using tapestry or yarn needle and matching yarn, sew back seam from top of bootie to heel.
- With wrong sides facing, use matching yarn to sew edges of sole and bootie together.
- Weave in loose ends.
- Repeat on second bootie.
SHOE STRING (MAKE 2):
- With crochet hk and white yarn, make a ch approximately 4 inches long.
- Thread one end on yarn or tapestry needle. Thread chain across center 3 sts on front of bootie as you would lace a shoe. Fasten off ends on inside.
- Repeat on second bootie.
Finished Size: Booties measure about 3-1/2 inches long x 3 inches high.
