Crocheted Football Helmet and Knit Booties

CAP
  • Worsted-weight yarn—1 ounce each of green or color of choice (MC) and gold or color of choice (CC) for sides of hat, and small amount of white for strap and optional stripe (see note)
  • Size F/5 crochet hook or size needed to obtain preferred size (see gauge)
  • Yarn or tapestry needle
  • 1/2-inch-square of white hook-and-loop tape
  • White all-purpose thread
  • Standard sewing supplies

BOOTIES
  • Sport-weight or soft worsted-weight yarn – 1 ounce each of green or color of choice (MC), gold or color of choice (CC) and white (see note)
  • Size 4 knitting needles
  • Size F/5 crochet hook
  • Tapestry or yarn needle
  • Two stitch markers
  • Scissors

CROCHETED FOOTBALL HELMET

HELPFUL ABBREVIATIONS GUIDE
ch(s) = chain(s)
dc(s) = double crochet(s)
hk =     hook
lp =      loop
sc(s) = single crochet(s)
sl st = slip stitch
[ ] = Instructions within brackets are repeated as directed.

GAUGE:

  1. Use size F/5 hook for newborn-size, size H/8 hook for 6-12 month-size and size J hook for toddler-size hat. Slight variation in gauge will change the finished size a bit.

SIDE (make 2):

  1. Round 1 (RS): With MC ch 4, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring, ch 3 for first dc, work 11 dcs in ring, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 12 dcs.
  2. Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 1 dc in same st, working in back loops only, work 2 dcs in each st around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 24 dcs.
  3. Round 3: Ch 3, working in back loops only, work 2 dcs in next dc, [work 1 dc in next dc, work 2 dcs in next dc] around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3, turn: 36 dcs.
  4. Row 1: Ch 3, working in both loops, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dcs, [work 2 dcs in next dc, work 1 dc in next 2 dcs] across, leaving 15 dcs in Round 3 unworked, turn: 27 dcs.
  5. Row 2: Ch 3, [work 1 dc in each of the next 5 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc] four times, work 1 dc in last dc and in top of ch-3, turn: 31 dcs.
  6. Row 3: Ch 3, [work 1 dc in each of the next 5 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc] across to ch-3, work 1 dc in top of ch-3, turn: 35 dcs.
  7. Row 4: Ch 3, work 2 dcs in next dc, work 1 dc in each dc across to last two sts, work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in top of ch-3: 37 dcs. Fasten off.
  8. Row 5: Join white or CC at end of Row 4, ch 1, work 1 sc in each st across row: 37 scs. Fasten off white.
  9. Row 6: Join CC at end of Row 5 if white was used in Row 5, ch 3, work 2 dcs in next sc, work 1 dc in each st across to last st, work 2 dcs in last st: 39 dcs. Fasten off.
  10. Repeat to make another side.
  11. Place hat sides together with RS facing and long edges of Row 6 matching. Sl st back lps only of Row 6 together. Fasten off.
  12. Weave in all loose ends.

STRAP:

  1. Row 1: With white, ch 31 or number needed for length of strap desired, work 1 sc in second ch from hk and in each remaining ch across, turn.
  2. Row 2-3: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each ch across, turn. Fasten off at end of Row 3.
  3. Weave in loose ends.

FINISHING:

  1. With white yarn, hand-sew one end of strap to RS of Round 3 on outside of one side of hat.
  2. With white thread, hand- or machine-sew loop side of hook-and-loop tape to opposite end of strap.
  3.  In the same way, sew hook side of hook-and-loop tape to opposite side of hat.

Finished Size: Newborn-size hat has a 16-inch circumference; 6-12 month-size hat has an 18-inch circumference; toddler-size hat has a 20-inch circumference.

KNIT BOOTIES

HELPFUL ABBREVIATION GUIDE
Ch = chain

k = knit

  1. Working in St st (k one row, p one row) 6 sts and 8 rows = 1 inch. Slight variation in gauge will change the finished size a bit.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES:

  1. Inc: Increase: Knit in the front and back of stitch.
  2. SSK: Slip, slip, knit: Slip the next two stitches one at a time as if you were knitting. Insert left needle from left to right through the slipped stitches and knit.
  3. SSP: Slip, slip, purl: Slip the next two stitches one at a time as if you were knitting. Return the stitches to the left needle, keeping them twisted. Purl the two twisted stitches together through the back loops.
  4. K 2, p 2 rib: Row 1: [K 2, p 2] across row.
  5. All remaining rows: Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches across row.

BOOTIE (MAKE 2):

  1. With white, cast on 43 sts.
  2. Rows 1-5: K across each row: 43 sts. Fasten off white at end of Row 5.
  3. Row 6: With MC, k 18, K2tog, place marker, k 3, place marker, SSK, k 18: 41 sts.
  4. Row 7: P 17, SSP, k 3 sts between markers, P2tog, p 17: 39 sts.
  5. Row 8: K until 2 sts remain before first marker, K2tog, k 3, SSK, k to end of row.
  6. Row 9: P until 2 sts remain before first marker, SSP, k 3, P2tog, p to end of row.
  7. Rows 10-13: Repeat Rows 8 and 9 until 12 sts remain on left and right sides of markers: 27 sts at end of Row 13.
  8. Row 14: K 8, inc 1 st in each of next 3 sts, k 2, inc 1 st in center st between markers, k 2, inc 1 in each of next 3 sts, k 8: 34 sts. Fasten off.

CUFF:

  1. With CC, work 3 in. of k 2, p 2 rib. Bind off loosely in pattern. Fasten off.

SOLE:

  1. With white, cast on 6 sts.
  2. Rows 1-2: K across row: 6 sts.
  3. Row 3: K 1 inc 1, k across to last st, k 1 inc 1: 8 sts.
  4. Rows 4-24: K across each row: 8 sts.
  5. Row 25: K2tog, k across row to last 2 sts, k2tog: 6 sts.
  6. Bind off, leaving last st on needle. Do not fasten off.
  7. Insert crochet hk in lp of last st, ch 1, sc evenly around entire sole, join with a sl st in beginning sc. Fasten off.
  8. Repeat to make a second bootie.Weave in all loose ends.

ASSEMBLY:

  1. Using tapestry or yarn needle and matching yarn, sew back seam from top of bootie to heel.
  2. With wrong sides facing, use matching yarn to sew edges of sole and bootie together.
  3. Weave in loose ends.
  4. Repeat on second bootie.

SHOE STRING (MAKE 2):

  1. With crochet hk and white yarn, make a ch approximately 4 inches long.
  2. Thread one end on yarn or tapestry needle. Thread chain across center 3 sts on front of bootie as you would lace a shoe. Fasten off ends on inside.
  3. Repeat on second bootie.

 

Finished Size: Booties measure about 3-1/2 inches long x 3 inches high.
