Instructions

GAUGE: Each completed small flower square measures about 5-1/2 inches square and each large flower square measures about 11 inches square. Slight variations in gauge will change the finished size a bit.

Techniques/stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations and stitch illustrations below.

  • Dc-trCl or Tr-dcCl (double crochet- treble crochet cluster or treble crochet-double crochet cluster): Holding back last lp of dc or tr st, work tr and dc or dc and tr in same st indicated, yo and draw through all lps on hk.
  • DcCl (double crochet cluster): Holding back last lp, work 3 dcs in st indicated, yo, draw through 4 lps on hk.
  • TrCl (treble crochet cluster): Holding back last lp, work 3 trs in st indicated, yo, draw through 4 lps on hk.
  • Quad tr (quadruple treble crochet): Yo three times before inserting hk into st, take off 2 lps at a time from hk as for working a dc or tr.
  • QuadCl (quadruple cluster): Holding back last lp, work the number of quad trs as directed in st indicated, yo, draw through all lps on hk.
  • Quint tr (quintuple treble crochet): Yo four times before inserting hk into st, take off 2 lps at a time from hk as for working a dc or tr.

DIRECTIONS: Before you begin, download this Afghan Chart. Make three of each flower as directed in the instructions that follow.

GOLD SUNFLOWER: With coffee, ch 4, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring.

  1. Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 8 scs in ring, join with a sl st in first sc: count 8 scs.
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 4 for first tr, hdc in same st, ch 1, (tr, hdc, ch 1) in each remaining sc around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-4: count 8 ch-1 sps.
  3. Rnd 3: Ch 3 for first part of trCl, complete trCl in same st, ch 2, [trCl, ch 2] in each remaining ch-1 sp around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 16 ch-2 sps. Fasten off.

Rnd 6: Attach medium sage in any ch-6 sp, ch 1, * in ch-6 sp, (work 3 scs, 3 hdcs, 1 dc) in same sp, in next ch-6 sp, (work 2 dcs, 3 trs, 2 quad trs), ch 3 for corner, in next ch-6 sp, (work 2 quad trs, 3 trs, 2 dcs), in next ch-6 sp, (work 1 dc, 3 hdcs, 3 scs); rep from * three times, join with a sl st in first sc: count 4 ch-3 sps and 112 sts. Fasten off.
  7. Rnd 7: Attach dark sage in any st of Rnd 7, ch 3 for first dc, dc in each st around, working (2 dcs, ch 2, 2 dcs) in center ch of each corner ch-3, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 128 dcs. Fasten off, leaving a 24-inch tail of yarn.

OFF-WHITE SUNFLOWER: Work the same as for gold sunflower, substituting off-white for cornmeal in Rnds 4-5.

WHITE CLOVER: With frosty green, ch 5, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring.

  1. Rnd 1: Ch 3 for first dc, tr in ring, [work 1 dc and 1 tr in ring] seven times, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 16 sts. Fasten off.
  2. Rnd 2: Attach off-white in any st, ch 3 for first dc, tr in same st, dc and tr in each remaining st around, join with a sl st in top of ch-3: count 32 sts.
  3. Rnd 3: Ch 2 for first hdc, [hdc and tr in next st, hdc in next st] around to last st, work hdc and tr in last st, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-2: count 48 sts. Fasten off off-white.
  4. Rnd 4: Attach light tan in any st, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each remaining st around, join with a sl st in first sc: count 48 scs. Fasten off.

RED CLOVER: With rose pink, ch 5, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring. Work the same as for white clover, substituting country rose in Rnds 2 and 3, and using dusty rose in Rnd 4.

WHITE FLEABANE: With cornmeal, ch 5, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring.

  1. Rnd 1: Ch 3 for first dc, work 15 dcs in ring, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 16 dcs. Fasten off.
  2. Rnd 2: Attach off-white between any sts, ch 4 for first quad tr, work 2 more quad trs in same sp, work 3 quad trs between remaining sts around: count 48 quad trs. Fasten off.
  3. Rnd 3: Attach light sage between any sts, ch 1, sc in same sp, sc between remaining sts around: count 48 scs.

PINK FLEABANE: Work the same as for white fleabane, making the following changes:

  1. Rnd 2: Attach off-white between any sts, ch 1, sc in same sp, sc between remaining sts around: count 16 scs. Fasten off.
  2. Rnd 3: Attach rose pink in any st, ch 4 for first quad tr, work 2 more quad trs in same st, work 3 quad trs in each st around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-4: count 48 quad trs. Fasten off.
  3. Rnd 4: Attach light sage between any sts, ch 1, sc in same sp, sc between remaining sts around: count 48 scs.

BEE BALM: With cornmeal, ch 4, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring.

BLACK-EYED SUSAN: With black, ch 4, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring.

  2. Cut a 24-inch strand of black. Holding yarn on the back, work strand into all off-white sts of Rnds 2-4 as if working in a yarn tail, creating tiny spots.

VIOLET: With off-white, ch 2.

  3. Repeat Rnds 1-3 to make a total of three petals.
  4. Thread needle with blue yarn. With right sides up, join petal points together, stitching through a ch-1 sp on each flower. Fasten off. Weave in loose ends.

  1. Rnd 1: With off-white, ch 4, ch 3 in fourth ch from hk for first dc, work 2 dcs in same ch, ch 3, [work 3 dcs, ch 3 in same ch] three times, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 12 dcs and four ch-3 sps. Fasten off.
  2. Rep Rnd 1 to make four petals.
  3. Border: Rnd 1: With right sides up, lay out four petals in a square with dc groups touching. With wrong sides facing, attach medium sage in ch-3 sp of two petals, sc to join, working 1 sc in matching dcs and adjoining chs. Fasten off.
  4. Rnd 2: Attach medium sage to outside of square, ch 3 for first dc, dc around, working 1 dc in each dc, 2 dcs in each ch-sp and (dc, ch 3, dc) in each corner ch-sp, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 48 dcs. Fasten off.
  5. Rnd 3: Attach dark sage, ch 2 for first hdc, hdc around, working 1 hdc in each hdc and (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in each ch-3 sp, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-2: count 48 hdcs. Fasten off, leaving a 24-inch tail of yarn.

SALSIFY: With cornmeal, ch 4, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring.

  1. Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 8 scs in ring, join with a sl st in first sc: count 8 scs.
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 10 for first quint tr and ch 5, [quint tr in next sc, ch 5] around, join with a sl st in fifth ch of beg ch-10: count 8 quint trs and 8 ch-5 sps. Fasten off.
  3. Rnd 3: Attach medium sage in any ch-5 sp of Rnd 1, work 3 scs in same ch-sp, work quint tr in sc of Rnd 1, work 3 scs in same ch-sp, [work 3 scs in next ch-sp, quint tr in next sc of Rnd 1, work 3 scs in same ch-sp] around, join with a sl st in first sc: count 8 quint trs and 48 scs.
  4. Rnd 4: Ch 3 for first dc, tr in same st, [ch 1, quad tr in next st, ch 1, (tr, dc) in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, (dc, tr) in next st] around to beg ch-3, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 56 sts. Fasten off.
  5. Rnd 5: Attach dark sage in any st, ch 1, sc around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in top of each quad tr, join with a sl st in first sc: count 60 scs. Fasten off, leaving a 24-inch tail of yarn.

ASSEMBLY:

  1. After completing three of each flower, lay one of each flower right side up as shown in layout diagram on page 55. Using dark sage yarn tails and needle, sew blocks together with wrong sides facing.
  2. Repeat two more times, alternating the placement of the off-white and gold sunflowers and arranging one of each small flower around the off-white and gold sunflowers in random order. Sew blocks together the same as before.
  3. With right sides up and long edges matching, lay out the three rows. Sew long edges of the rows together the same as before, alternating the position of off-white and gold sunflowers.

EDGING:

  1. Rnd 1: With RS facing, attach dark sage in any st on outside edge of afghan, ch 1, sc in each st around working 3 scs in each corner, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
  2. Rnd 2: Attach medium sage, ch 3, complete 3 trCl in same st, ch 3, [sk 1 st, 3 trCl in next st, ch 3] around to beg ch-3, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.
  3. Rnd 3: Attach light sage in any open sc of Rnd 2, ch 3, complete 3 trCl in same st, ch 3, [3 trCl in next open st of Rnd 2, ch 3] around to beg ch-3, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.
  4. Rnd 4: Attach dark sage between any 3 trCls, ch 1, sc in same sp, ch 1, [sc over both colors of ch-3 sps between 3 trCls, ch 1] around, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
  5. Weave in all loose ends.
