GAUGE: 14 scs and 16 rows = 4 -inches.

Stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES:

  • Sc 2 tog: Insert hk in first sc, yo and pull up a lp, insert hk in second sc, yo and pull up a lp; yo and draw yarn through 3 lps on hk.
  • Attach yarn with a sc: With a sl knot on hk, insert hk in st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw yarn through 2 lps on hk.

DIRECTIONS: Weave in loose ends as you work.

BULL:

  1. Muzzle M-Row 1 (right side): With white, ch 5; work 2 scs in second ch from hk, sc in next 2 chs, work 2 scs in last ch: count 6 scs.

  24. Chin C-Row 1: With right side facing, rotate piece so M-Row 1 is on top and join white with a sc in ch at base of first right-hand st. Sc in same ch, sc in next 2 chs, work 2 scs in last ch: count 6 scs.
  25. C-Row 2: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first st, sc across until 1 st remains, work 2 scs in last st: count 8 scs.
  26. C-Row 3: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  27. C-Rows 4-7: Rep C-Rows 2 and 3 alternately: count 10,10,12,12 scs. Fasten off after C-Row 7.
  28. With black, sew up face seams, attaching center gusset to sides at ends of rows, easing to fit. Sew ends of rows of chin to ends of Rows 1-7 of face sides.
  29. Back Gusset BG-Row 1 (right side): With white, ch 3; work 2 scs in second ch from hk and 2 scs in next ch: count 4 scs.
  30. BG-Rows 2-3: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  31. BG-Row 4: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first st, sc across until 1 st remains, work 2 scs in last st: count 6 scs.
  32. BG-Rows 5-7: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  33. BG-Rows 8-19: Rep BG-Rows 4-7 three times: count 8,8,8,8,10,10,10,10,12,12,12,12 scs.

  35. Back Right Side BR-Row 1: Holding back gusset with right side facing and BG-Row 1 at the top, join black with a sc in end of BG-Row 25 and sc in end of each row to top: count 25 scs.

  41. Back Left Side BL-Row 1: Holding back gusset with right side facing, join black with a sc in opposite end of BG-Row 1 and sc in end of each row as before: count 25 scs.

  43. BL-Row 5: Ch 1, turn; sc across until 2 sts remain, sc 2 tog: count 20 scs.
  44. BL-Rows 6-7: Rep BR-Row 2: count 18,16 scs. Fasten off after BL-Row 7.
  45. Match head front to head back, matching the white sections at top of head. Leaving white section at top of head and black and white sections of neck open, use black yarn to sew top and sides of black sections together, easing to fit.
  46. Neck N-Rnd 1: Join white with a sc at beg of (white) back gusset and sc in each st and end of row around as follows: back gusset (3), back side (7), head side seam (1), right front side end of rows (7), chin (12), left side front end of rows (7), head side seam (1), back side (7). Join with sl st to first st: count 45 scs.
  47. N-Rnd 2: Working in rnds, ch 1, sc in next 18 sts (beg each rnd with first sc in same sp as sl st); [sc 2 tog, sc in next 3 sts] twice; sc 2 tog, sc in next 15 sts; join with a sl st in first st: count 42 scs.
  48. N-Rnd 3: Ch 1, [sc in next 4 scs, sc 2 tog] around; join as before: count 35 scs.
  49. N-Rnd 4: Ch 1, [sc 2 tog, sc in next 5 sts] around; join as before: count 30 scs.
  50. N-Rnds 5-6: Ch 1, sc around; join as before. Fasten off after Rnd 6.
  51. Body B-Row 1 (make 2): Starting from bottom with white, ch 27; sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: count 26 scs.
  52. B-Rows 2-30: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  53. B-Row 31: Ch 1, turn; sc 2 tog, sc across until 2 sts remain, sc 2 tog: count 24 scs.
  54. B-Rows 32-33: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  55. B-Row 34: Rep B-Row 31: count 22 scs.
  56. B-Row 35: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  57. B-Rows 36-39: Rep B-Row 31: count 20,18,16,14 scs.
  58. B-Row 40: Ch 1, turn; sc across. Fasten off.
  59. With white, sew two body pieces tog, leaving neck open. Stuff firmly. Stuff paper roll firmly and insert in center of neck. Sew neck to body and firmly stuff neck around paper roll. Stuff head firmly and sew top of head closed.
  60. Legs L-Row 1 (make 4 pieces): With black, ch 7; work 2 scs in second ch from hk, sc in each ch across until 1 ch remains, work 2 scs in last ch: count 8 scs.
  61. L-Row 2: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first st, sc across until 1 st remains, work 2 scs in last st: count 10 scs.
  62. L-Rows 3-5: Ch 1, turn; sc across. At end of L-Row 5, end black and change to white.
  63. L-Rows 6-40: With white, ch 1, turn; sc across. At end of L-Row 40, do not turn.
  64. L-Row 41: Ch 1, sc in the end of each row to L-Row 1, then in ch at base of each st of L-Row 1 and in end of each row up opposite side to L-Row 40, changing colors to match the rows as you work. Fasten off.
  65. With wrong sides facing each other, sew pairs of legs together. Stuff legs firmly through L-Row 30, leaving rest of leg unstuffed. Sew to bottom of body.
  66. Arms A-Row 1 (make 4 pieces): With black, ch 5; work 2 scs in second ch from hk, sc in each ch across until 1 ch remains, work 2 scs in last ch: count 6 scs.
  67. A-Rows 2-32: Rep L-Rows 2-32: count 8 scs.
  68. A-Row 33: Rep L-Row 41.
  69. With wrong sides facing each other, sew pairs of arms together. Stuff firmly through L-Row 16, leaving rest of arms unstuffed. Sew to shoulders of body at side seams.
  70. Ears E-Row 1 (make 2): With black, ch 12; sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: count 11 scs.
  71. E-Rows 2-6: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  72. E-Rows 7-14: Ch 1, turn; sc 2 tog, sc across: count 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3 scs. Fasten off after E-Row 14.
  73. E-Row 15: Join black with a sc in one end of E-Row 1, sc in each st and end of row around, working up one side of ear and down the other to opposite end of E-Row 1. Fasten off.
  74. Fold ear sides toward center of ear and tack. Sew to top of head along the seam.
  75. Horns H-Rnd 1 (make 2): With light brown, ch 3, sl st in third ch from hk to form a ring; ch 1, work 6 scs in ring.
  76. H-Rnd 2: Work [2 scs in next st, sc in next 2 sts] around: count 8 scs.
  77. H-Rnd 3: Sl st in next 3 sts, sc in next 5 sts.
  78. H-Rnd 4: [Sl st in next 3 sts, work 2 scs in next st] twice: count 10 sts.
  79. H-Rnds 5-6: Sl st in first 3 sts, sc in next 7 sts.
  80. H-Rnd 7: Sc in 10 sts.
  81. H-Rnd 8: Sc in first st, sl st in next 3 sts, sc in next 6 sts.
  82. H-Rnd 9: Sc in next 2 sts, sl st in next 3 sts, sc in next 5 sts.
  83. H-Rnd 10: Sc in 10 sts; join with a sl st in next st. Fasten off. Stuff firmly. Referring to photo on previous page for position, sew to head.
  84. Face: Sew on button eyes. With black, satin-stitch each nostril on M-Row 6. Space nostrils about 5/8 inch apart and make the satin stitches about 3/8 inch wide.
  85. Nose Ring: With yellow, work 15 scs around center of 3-inch length of chenille stem and fasten off. Bend back ends of chenille stem over scs, squeezing tightly to secure. Shape into 3/4 of a ring shape with bent ends in back and sew to nostrils as shown in photo.

SHIRT: Alternating light green and off-white, change colors at the end of every second row.

  1. Shirt Front SF-Row 1 (wrong side): With light green, ch 33; sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: count 32 scs.
  2. SF-Rows 2-26: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  3. Crochet back of shirt the same as front. With wrong sides together, tack the two pieces together at each end of SF-Row 26.
  4. Sleeve SL-Row 1: Alternating yarn colors as before, join light green with a sc in end of 12th row to the right of shoulder tack. Sc in each end of row across to 12th row on left side of shoulder tack: count 24 scs.
  5. SL-Rows 2-10: Ch 1, turn; sc across. Make second sleeve in same way. Leave shirt unfinished for now.

OVERALLS: Overalls Leg (make 2) OL-Row 1 (wrong side): Starting at bottom of leg with dark green ch 33; sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: count 32 scs.

  1. OL-Rows 2-24: Ch 1, turn; sc across. Fasten off after L-Row 24.
  2. With wrong sides together, fold each leg in half lengthwise, matching ends of rows. Sew together to form two tubes. Lay the legs side-by-side with OL-Row 24 of each piece at top. With seams matching on the inside, tack legs together at top of seams.
  3. Overalls Pants OL-Row 25: With inside of back overalls facing, join matching yarn with a sc in 16th st to the right of tacked seams; sc in 15 sts to seam, sc in 16 sts after seam across second leg: count 32 scs.
  4. OL-Rows 26-42: Ch 1, turn; sc across. Fasten off after OL-Row 42.
  5. Rep OL-Rows 25-42 on other side of legs for front of overalls. Do not fasten off after OL-Row 42.
  6. Overalls Bib OL-Rows 43-44: Ch 1, turn; sc 2 tog, sc across until 2 sts remain, sc 2 tog: count 30,28 scs.
  7. OL-Row 45: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  8. OL-Rows 46-56: Rep OL-Rows 43-45 alternately: count 26,24,24,22,20,20,18,16,16, 14,12 scs. Fasten off after OL-Row 56.
  9. Bull’s Suspenders SU-Row 1: With inside of back of overalls facing, join matching yarn with a sc in 12th st from right end of OL-Row 42; sc in next 2 sts: count 3 scs.
  10. SU-Rows 2-48: Ch 1, turn, sc across. Fasten off after SU-Row 48.
  11. Return to inside of back of overalls. Sk 4 sts and join matching yarn with a sc in next st; sc in next 2 sts: count 3 scs. Rep SU-Rows 1-48.
  12. Finishing Rnd: Sew up side seams of overalls through OL-Row 42. Join matching yarn with a sc in any st on upper edge on back of pants; sc in each st and end of row around, going around top of overalls (front and back) and each suspender, with 2 scs in every corner; join with a sl st in beg sc and fasten off.
  13. Sew underarm seams of shirt. Dress doll. Sew shoulders to fit doll.
  14. Put overalls on doll. Cross suspenders in back, bring ends over shoulders and tack to corners of front bib. Add buttons. Sew bottom of shirt back to overalls in back.

COW: Make girl the same as boy, omitting the nose ring. With dark green, ch 40 and fasten off. At each end of ch, tie a knot to prevent raveling and trim off yarn tails. Tie a bow and tack bow to center of girl’s forehead as shown in photo.

BLOUSE:

  1. BL-Row 1: Alternating dark green and off-white, rep instructions for Shirt front and back. Tack the shoulders as for Shirt and rep SL-Row 1 of Shirt with dark green.
  2. BL-Row 2: Ch 1, turn; [work 2 scs in next st, sc in next st] across: count 36 scs.
  3. BL-Row 3: Ch 1, turn; [sc in next 2 sts, work 2 scs in next st] across: count 48 scs.
  4. BL-Rows 4-12: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  5. BL-Row 13: Ch 1, turn; [sc in next st, sc 2 tog] across: count 32 scs.
  6. BL-Row 14: Ch 1, turn; [sc in next 2 sts, sc 2 tog] across: count 24 scs.
  7. BL-Rows 15-16: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  8. BL-Row 17: Ch 3, turn, dc in same st as ch-3; work 2 dcs in each st across. Fasten off. Make second sleeve in same way. Sew underarm seams. Dress doll and sew shoulder seams.

JUMPER J-Row 1 (wrong side): Starting at waist with light green, ch 33; sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: count 32 scs.

  1. J-Rows 2-6: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  2. J-Rows 7-20: Rep OL-Rows 43-56 of overalls for bib of jumper.
  3. Skirt SK-Row 1: With wrong side of bib facing, join matching yarn with a sc in ch at base of first sc; sc in ch at base of each st across: count 32 scs.
  4. SK-Rows 2-3: Rep BL-Rows 2-3: count 48,64 scs.
  5. SK-Rows 4-7: Ch 1, turn; sc across.
  6. SK-Row 8: Ch 1, turn; [sc in next 7 sts, work 2 scs in next st] across: count 72 scs.
  7. SK-Rows 9-28: Ch 1, turn; sc across. Fasten off after SK-Row 28.
  8. Make back of jumper in the same way. With wrong sides together, sew front and back jumpers together at side seams from bottom of skirt to J-Row 6.
  9. Straps ST-Row 1: Join matching yarn with a sc in first st on right end of J-Row 20; sc in next 2 sts: count 3 scs.
  10. ST-Rows 2-30: Ch 1, turn, sc across. Fasten off after ST-Row 30.
  11. Sk 6 sts and join matching yarn with a sc in next st; sc in next 2 sts: count 3 scs. Rep ST-Rows 2-30. Rep Finishing Rnd of bull’s overalls.
  12. Dress doll. Bring straps over doll’s shoulders, without crossing in back, and tack ends to corners of front bib.

FINISHED SIZE: Cows are 32 inches tall.
