Instructions

GAUGE: Working with 2 strands of yarn, 6 scs and 6 rows = 2 inches. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Stitches/techniques used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

  • Dec 1: Insert hk in first sc, yo and draw a lp through; insert hk in next sc, yo and draw a lp through; yo and draw yarn through all 3 lps on hk.
  • Join with a sc: With a sl knot on hk, work 1 sc in designated st.

DIRECTIONS:

SOLE (make 2):

  1. Row 1 (RS): With one strand each of Paddy Green and Cherry Red held together and used as one, ch 5; work 2 scs in second ch from hk, sc in each of next 2 chs, work 2 scs in last ch: count 6(6) scs.
  2. (Row 2 of size 8 only): Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in the first sc, sc in each sc until 1 sc remains, work 2 scs in the last sc: count 8 scs.
  3. Row 2(3): Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc: count 6(8) scs.
  4. Row 3(4): Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first sc, sc in each sc until 1 sc remains, work 2 scs in last sc: count 8(10) scs.
  5. Rows 4-13(5-17): Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc: count 8(10) scs.
  6. Rows 14-15(18-20): Ch 1, turn; dec 1, sc in each sc: count 1 less sc at the end of each row.
  7. Rows 16-24(21-31): Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc: count 6(7) scs.
  8. (Row 32 for size 8 only): Ch 1, turn; dec 1, sc in each rem sc: count 6 scs.
  9. Row 25(33): Ch 1, turn; dec 1, sc in each of next 2 scs, dec 1: count 4(4) scs.
  10. Outer edge: Ch 1, turn; working around entire outer edge, work 58 (74) scs evenly spaced around the sole, join with a sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

UPPER SECTION (make 2):

  1. U-Row 1: With one strand of Paddy Green, ch 3; sc in second ch from hk, work 3 scs in next ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, sc in next ch.
  2. U-Row 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in first sc, work 2 scs in each of next 3 scs, sc in last sc: count 8(8) scs. (The piece should look like half of a circle.)
  3. (U-Row 3 for size 6/7 only): Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc: count 8 scs.
  4. U-Row 4(3): Ch 1, turn; sc in each of the next 2 scs, [work 2 scs in next sc, sc in each of the next 2 scs] twice: count 10(10) scs.
  5. (U-Rows 5-6 for size 6/7 only): Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc: count 10 scs.
  6. U-Row 7(4): Ch 1, turn; sc in next 2 scs, work 2 scs in next sc, sc in each of next 4 scs, work 2 scs in next sc, sc in each of next 2 scs: count 12(12) scs.
  7. U-Rows 8-9(5): Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc: count 12(12) scs.
  8. U-Row 10(6): Ch 1, turn; sc in each of the next 3 scs, work 2 scs in next sc, sc in each of next 4 scs, work 2 scs in next sc, sc in each of the next 3 scs: count 14(14) scs.
  9. U-Row 11(7-9): Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc: count 14(14) scs.
  10. U-Row 12(10): Ch 1, turn; sc in each of the next 4 scs, [work 2 scs in next sc, sc in each of next 4 scs] twice: count 16(16) scs.
  11. (U-Rows 11-13 for size 8 only): Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc: count 16 scs.
  12. (U-Row 14 for size 8 only): Ch 1, turn; sc in each of next 4 scs, work 2 scs in next sc, sc in each of next 6 scs, work 2 scs in next sc, sc in each of next 4 scs: count 18 scs.
  13. (U-Row 15 for size 8 only): Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc: count 18 scs.
  14. (U-Row 16 for size 8 only): Ch 1, turn; sc in each of next 5 scs, work 2 scs in next sc, sc in each of next 6 scs, work 2 scs in next sc, sc in each of next 5 scs: count 20 scs.
  15. Right side: R-Row 13(17): Ch 1, turn; sc in each of next 5(6) scs, skip remaining sts.
  16. R-Rows 14-29(18-37): Ch 1, turn; sc in each of next 5(6) scs. Fasten off at the end of R-Row 29(37).
  17. Left side: L-Row 13(17): Skip center 6(8) sts of U-Row 12(16) and join yarn with a sc in next st, sc in each of next 4(5) scs: count 5(6) scs.
  18. L-Rows 14-29(18-37): Ch 1, turn; sc in each of next 5(6) scs. Fasten off at the end of L-Row 29(37), leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
  19. Thread the tapestry needle with the yarn tail. With right sides together, sew the last row of each side together to form the heel.

BOTTOM EDGE:

  • B-Rnd 1(RS): Join one strand of Paddy Green to bottom edge with a sc at heel seam, work 57 (73) more scs evenly spaced around; join with a sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

TOP EDGE:

  • T-Rnd 1: Join one strand of Paddy Green with a sc at top edge of heel seam, sc in side edge of 16 (20) rows, dec 1 sc over next row and first skipped st at center, sc across center sts to within last st, dec 1 sc over last center st and next row of next side, sc in side of next 16 (20) rows; join with a sl st in beg sc.
  • T-Rnd 2: Ch 1, working in back lps only, sc in each st around; join with a sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

CUFF:

  • C-Row 1: Join one strand of Cherry Red with a sl st in back lp of first st of T-Rnd 2, ch 16, sc in second ch from hk and each remaining ch, sl st in back lp of same st as joining and back lp of next st of top edge.
  • C-Row 2: Ch 1, turn; working in back lps only, sc in each st of cuff.
  • C-Row 3: Ch 1, turn; working in back lps only, sc in each st of cuff, sl st in back lps of next 2 sts of top edge.
  • Rep C-Rows 2-3 around, ending with a C-Row 2. Fasten off at the end of last repetition, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  • Thread tapestry needle with yarn tail. With right sides together, whipstitch last row of cuff to beginning row of cuff. Bend top half of cuff to the outside.

ASSEMBLY:

  • With right side of sole facing right side of upper section, use a single strand of Paddy Green to whipstitch the two pieces together.
  • Use tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends. Turn slipper right side out.

POM-POM (make 2):

  1. Cut and set aside an 8-inch length of Paddy Green yarn.
  2. Wind Cherry Red and Paddy Green yarn 50 times around the poster board or lightweight cardboard square, winding both colors at the same time. Slide yarn off the square and tie the 8-inch piece around the middle of the bundle. Cut loops on each end. Trim even.
  3. Referring to the photo on page 41 for position, tie a pom-pom to the front of each slipper and use the tapestry needle to weave in the loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Directions are for Woman’s size 6/7. Changes for Woman’s size 8 are given in parentheses.
