Dc 3 tog: Yo, insert hk in first st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw yarn through 2 lps on hk; * yo, insert hk in next st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw yarn through 2 lps on hk; rep from * one more time; yo and draw yarn through remaining 4 lps on hk.

  1. Row 1: With green, ch 4; work 4 dcs in fourth ch from hk.

EDGING: Decide which side of bonnet should be on the outside and begin working on the edge that will be the back of the bonnet.

  1. E-Row 1: Join white with a sl st around the dc at end of first row, ch 1, work 2 scs around same st as sl st; * work 2 scs around dc at end of next row; rep from * to opposite end of bonnet, work 5 scs in corner st; rep from * ending with a sl st in beg sc.
  2. E-Row 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st, sc in next 2 scs, ch 3, sl st in same st; * sc in next 3 scs, ch 3, sl st in same st; rep from * around until 1 sc remains, sc in last sc, join with a sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

TIES: With right side of bonnet facing, join white with a sl st in center sc on one end of bonnet; ch 58, sc in second ch from hk, work 3 scs in each of next 6 chs, sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in joining sc. Fasten off. Repeat on opposite end of bonnet.

POINSETTIA: Petals (make 6): With red, ch 8; sl st in second ch from hk, sl st in next ch, sc in next 2 chs, hdc in next 2 chs, work 7 dcs in last ch; continuing around in unworked lps of ch, hdc in next 2 chs, sc in next 2 chs, sl st in last 2 chs. Fasten off.

  1. Use needle to weave in loose ends of petals. Referring to photo at far left for position, use matching yarn to tack petals onto one side of bonnet, leaving a circular area open at center of petals.
  2. With needle and yellow yarn, embroider several French knots in center of poinsettia. See stitch illustrations on page 66.
  3. Use needle to weave in all remaining loose ends on the bonnet.

FINISHED SIZE: Excluding ties, bonnet measures about 17-1/2 inches long x 9-1/4 inches wide.
