Instructions

GAUGE: One granny square is 4 inches square.

DIRECTIONS: Each square is worked in rounds on the right side (RS) of work throughout.

GRANNY SQUARE: With any autumn color yarn, ch 4, leaving a 2-inch-long tail; sl st in fourth ch from hk to form a ring.

  1. Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 2 dcs in ring, ch 3; * work 3 dcs in ring, ch 3; rep from * two more times; join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3; sl st in each of next 2 dcs and in next ch-3 sp.
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 3, work (2 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs, ch 1) in same ch-3 sp; work (3 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs, ch 1) in next ch-3 sp; rep from * around; join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.
  3. Rnd 3: Attach off-white yarn with sl st in any corner ch-3 sp, ch 3, work (2 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs, ch 1) in same ch-3 sp; * work (3 dcs, ch 1) in next ch-1 sp, work (3 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs, ch 1) in next corner ch-3 sp; rep from * two more times; work (3 dcs, ch 1) in next ch-1 sp; join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. Use tapestry needle to weave in loose ends.

PLACE MAT (Make four): For each place mat, make six granny squares, using a different autumn color yarn for the first two rnds of each square.

  1. With right sides up, lay out the squares so each place mat is two squares wide by three squares long, arranging the colors as desired.
  2. To join the squares, thread tapestry needle with a long length of off-white yarn. Hold two squares so right sides are together and edges are even and whipstitch together along one edge, working through back loops only and beginning and ending in center of corner ch-3s.
  3. Whipstitch together two rows of three squares each, then whipstitch the rows together. Weave in loose ends.

EDGING:

  1. E-Rnd 1 (RS): Attach off-white yarn with a sl st in any corner ch-3 sp. Ch 3, work (2 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs, ch 1) in same corner ch-3 sp; * work (3 dcs, ch 1) in each ch-1 sp to next corner, work (3 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs, ch 1) in corner ch-3 sp; rep from * two more times; work (3 dcs, ch 1) in each ch-1 sp to first corner; join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.
  2. E-Rnd 2: Attach the unused fall color yarn with a sl st in any corner ch-3 sp and rep E-Rnd 1 without fastening off.
  3. E-Rnd 3: Sl st in top of next 2 dcs and in next ch-3 sp and rep E-Rnd 1. Fasten off.
  4. E-Rnd 4: Attach off-white yarn with a sl st in any corner ch-3 sp and rep E-Rnd 1 without fastening off.
  5. E-Rnd 5: Ch 2, sc in top of each dc and in each ch-1 sp and work 5 scs in each corner ch-3 sp around; join with a sl st in top of beg ch-2. Fasten off. Weave in loose ends.

TABLE RUNNER: Make 14 granny squares, using a different autumn color yarn for the center of every two squares. Make another four granny squares, using only four of the autumn colors for a total of 18 squares.

Lay out squares so table runner is three squares wide by six squares long, arranging the colors as desired. Referring to instructions for place mats, whipstitch together six rows of three squares each, then whipstitch the rows together and rep E-Rnds 1-5.

FINISHED SIZE: Place mat is 13 inches wide x 17 inches long. Table runner is 17 inches wide x 29 inches long.
