Instructions

GAUGE: Each afghan block is 10 inches square. Each pillow block is 14 inches square. A difference in gauge will change the finished size of the afghan, but will not damage this project.

BACK POST DOUBLE CROCHET: bpdc

Yo, insert hk from back to front between 2 sts, then working from right to left, come up from front to back between following 2 sts; draw through a lp and complete dc as usual.

FRONT POST DOUBLE CROCHET: fpdc

Yo, insert hk from front to back between 2 sts, then working from right to left, come up from back to front between following 2 sts; draw through a lp and complete dc as usual.

BOBBLE: * Yo, insert hk in next st and pull up a 1/2-inch-long lp, yo and insert hk in same st and pull up another 1/2-inch-long lp; yo and draw yarn through all lps on hk.

DIRECTIONS: 

AFGHAN:

  1. BLOCK (Make 12): Rnd 1: With red, ch 4; sl st in fourth ch from hk to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc, ch 1), work [3 dc in ring, ch 1] three times; work 2 dc in ring, join with a sl st in center ch of beg ch-3.
  2. Rnd 2: Sl st in ch-1 space, ch 2 (counts as 1 dc); * bpdc around first dc, fpdc around second dc, bpdc around third dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 space; rep from * two more times; bpdc around first dc, fpdc around second dc, bpdc around third dc, (dc, ch 1) in next ch-1 space, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-2. Fasten off.
  3. Rnd 3: With a green slip knot on hk, join yarn with a sc in any corner ch-1 space, ch 2, sc in the same ch-1 space; * sc in each of next 5 sts, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-1 space; rep from * two more times; sc in each of next 5 sts, join with a sl st in beg sc.
  4. Rnd 4: Sl st in first ch-2 space, ch 2, work 1 bobble in same ch-2 space; * ch 1, work 1 bobble in first sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc and work 1 bobble in next sc] three times, ch 1, work 1 bobble in corner ch-2 space; rep from * two more times; ch 1, work 1 bobble in first sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc and work 1 bobble in next sc] three times, ch 1, sl st in top of beg corner bobble, ch 1.
  5. Rnd 5: * In corner bobble, work (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc), sc in each space between bobbles and in the top of each bobble across one edge of block, ending in space before next corner bobble; rep from * three more times; sl st in beg sc. (There should be 11 sc between two ch-2 spaces.)
  6. Rnd 6: Sl st in first ch-2 space, ch 2, work 1 bobble in same ch-2 space; * ch 1, work 1 bobble in first sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc and work 1 bobble in next sc] five times, ch 1, work 1 bobble in corner ch-2 space; rep from * two more times; ch 1, work 1 bobble in first sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc and work 1 bobble in next sc] five times, ch 1, sl st in top of beg corner bobble, ch 1.
  7. Rnd 7: * In corner bobble, work (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc), sc in each space between bobbles and in the top of each bobble across one edge of block, ending in space before next corner bobble; rep from * three more times; sl st in beg sc. (There should be 15 sc between two ch-2 spaces.) Fasten off.
  8. Rnd 8: With red, attach yarn in any corner ch-2 space, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc, ch 1), work 2 dc in same space; * work 1 dc in each of next 15 sc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 space; rep from * two more times; work 1 dc in each of next 15 sc and 1 dc in last corner ch-2 space, sl st in center ch of beg ch-3.
  9. Rnd 9: Sl st to first corner ch-space, ch 2; work (1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-space; * [bpdc around next dc, fpdc around next dc] across one edge of block, ending with bpdc around last dc of edge, work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-space; rep from * two more times; [bpdc around next dc, fpdc around next dc] across one edge of block, ending with bpdc around last dc of edge, sl st in top of beg ch-2.
  10. Rnds 10-11: Repeat Rnd 9, fastening off yarn at the end of Rnd 11.
  11. Joining: With right sides together, sc two blocks together along one edge, beginning and ending in a ch-2 space. Add a third block to the opposite side of one square in the same way, making a strip of three squares. Make four strips of three squares, then sc the strips together so the afghan is three blocks wide and four blocks long.
  12. BORDER: Rnd 1: With a green slip knot on hk, join yarn with a sc in any corner where work will begin along a long edge; (ch 1, sc) in same ch-2 space; * evenly space 133 sc to corner, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch-2 space, evenly space 99 sc to corner **, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch-2 space; rep from * to ** one more time; join with a sl st in beg sc.
  13. Border Rnd 2: Sl st in first ch-2 space, ch 2, work 1 bobble in same ch-2 space; * ch 1, work 1 bobble in first sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc and work 1 bobble in next sc] across edge to next corner, ch 1, work 1 bobble in corner ch-2 space; rep from * two more times; ch 1, work 1 bobble in first sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc and work 1 bobble in next sc] across edge to next corner, ending with ch 1, sl st in top of beg corner bobble.
  14. Border Rnds 3-9: Rep Border Rnds 1 and 2. (The number of sc worked across edges of odd-numbered rows will increase by four sts each time.) Fasten off yarn at end of Rnd 9.
  15. Border Rnd 10: With red, attach yarn in any corner ch-2 space, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc, ch 1), work 2 dc in same space; * work 1 dc in each sc across edge to next corner, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 space; rep from * two more times; work 1 dc in each sc across edge to next corner, work 1 dc in last corner ch-2 space, sl st in center ch of beg ch-3.
  16. Rnd 11: Sl st to first corner ch-space, ch 2; work (1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-space; * [bpdc around next dc, fpdc around next dc] across one edge of block, ending with bpdc around last dc of edge, work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-1 space; rep from * two more times; [bpdc around next dc, fpdc around next dc] across one edge of block, ending with bpdc around last dc of edge, sl st in top of beg ch-2.
  17. Rnds 12-17: Repeat Rnd 11, fastening off yarn at the end of Rnd 17. Use yarn needle to weave in all loose ends.

PILLOW:

  1. BLOCK (Make 2): Rnds 1-11: Repeat Rnds 1-11 of afghan block.
  2. Rnd 12: With a green slip knot on hk, join yarn with a sc in any corner ch-2 space; ch 2, sc in the same ch-2 space; * sc in each of next 33 sts, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 space; rep from * two more times; sc in each of next 31 sts, join with a sl st in beg sc.
  3. Rnd 13: Sl st in first ch-2 space, ch 2, work 1 bobble in same ch-2 space; * ch 1, work 1 bobble in first sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc and work 1 bobble in next sc] 17 times, ch 1, work 1 bobble in corner ch-2 space; rep from * two more times; ch 1, work 1 bobble in first sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc and work 1 bobble in next sc] 17 times, ch 1, sl st in top of beg corner bobble.
  4. Rnd 14: * In corner bobble, work (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc), sc in each space between bobbles and in the top of each bobble across one edge of block, ending in space before next corner bobble; rep from * three more times; sl st in beg sc. (There should be 37 sc between two ch-2 spaces.)
  5. Rnd 15: Sl st in first ch-2 space, ch 2, work 1 bobble in same ch-2 space; * ch 1, work 1 bobble in first sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc and work 1 bobble in next sc] 19 times, ch 1, work 1 bobble in corner ch-2 space; rep from * two more times; ch 1, work 1 bobble in first sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc and work 1 bobble in next sc] 19 times, ch 1, sl st in top of beg corner bobble.
  6. Rnd 16: Repeat Rnd 14. (There should be 41 sc between two ch-2 spaces.) Fasten off. Use yarn needle to weave in all loose ends.
  7. Finishing: With right sides together, sc two blocks together along three edges. Insert pillow form and complete fourth edge. Fasten off. Weave in loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Afghan is 45 inches x 55 inches and pillow is 14 inches square.
