Instructions

GAUGE:  With size F hook in sc, 7 sts and 8 rows = 2 inches.

Special Stitches:

  • SINGLE CROCHET 2 STITCHES TOGETHER (sc 2 sts tog): Insert hook in next st, draw up a loop, repeat in next st (3 loops on hook), yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook to complete.
  • TRIPLE CROCHET 2 STITCHES TOGETHER (tr 2 sts tog): * Yo twice and insert hook in next st, draw up a loop, (yo, draw through 2 loops) twice *, repeat between *’s in next st (3 loops on hook), yo, draw through all loops on hook.
  • TRIPLE CROCHET 3 STITCHES TOGETHER (tr 3 sts tog): Work as for tr 2 sts tog, repeating between *’s in next 2 sts (4 loops on hook), yo, draw through all loops on hook.
  • CHANGING COLORS: For hat, join new colors with sl st in beginning st of previous round. For scarf, join new colors with sl st in last st of previous row.

HAT:

  1. With green and F hook, ch 11.
  2. Ribbing Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
  3. Ribbing Row 2: Working in back loops only, ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
  4. Repeat Ribbing Row 2 until piece measures 16-1/2 in. long. Bring short ends together. Join with a sl st in front loop of row closest to you and back loop of back row, stitching first and last rows together. Continue across edge.
  5. Round 1: Working in ends of ribbing rows, work 60 sc evenly spaced around ribbing, join with sl st in top of beginning sc.
  6. Rounds 2-10: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across, join with sl st in top of beginning sc.
  7. Round 11: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, * dc in next st, 3 tr in next st, dc in next st, sc in next st, repeat from * around, omitting last sc, join with sl st in top of beginning sc. Fasten off.
  8. Round 12: Join white, ch 3, work tr in base of ch-3 until 2 loops remain on hook, tr in next st until 3 loops remain on hook, yo, pull through all loops, * dc in next st, sc in next st, dc in next st, tr next 3 sts tog, repeat from * around, omitting last tr next 3 sts tog, join with sl st in top of beginning tr. Fasten off.
  9. Round 13: Join red, ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in top of beginning sc: 60 sc. Fasten off.
  10. Round 14: Join white, ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in top of beginning sc.
  11. Rounds 15-18: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around, join with sl st in top of beginning sc. Fasten off.
  12. Round 19: Join red, ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in top of beginning sc. Fasten off.
  13. Round 20: Join white, ch 1, turn, (sc in next 2 sts, sc next 2 sts tog) around, join with sl st in top of beginning sc: 45 sts.
  14. Round 21: Repeat Round 11.
  15. Round 22: Join green, ch 3, tr in next st, * dc in next st, sc in next st, dc in next st, tr next 3 sts tog, repeat from * to last 5 sts, dc in next st, sc in next st, dc in next st, work tr in next dc until 2 loops remain on hook, join with sl st in top of beginning tr.
  16. Round 23: Ch 1, turn, (sc in next 2 sts, sc next 2 sts tog) around, join with sl st in top of beginning sc: 33 sts.
  17. Round 24: Ch 1, turn, (sc in next 2 sts, sc next 2 sts tog) to last st, sc in last st, join with sl st in top of beginning sc: 25 sts.
  18. Round 25: Ch 1, turn, (sc in next st, sc next 2 sts tog) to last st, sc in last st, join with sl st in top of beginning sc: 17 sts.
  19. Round 26: Ch 1, turn, (sc in next st, sc next 2 sts tog) to last 2 sts, sc last 2 sts tog, join with sl st in top of beginning sc: 11 sc.
  20. Round 27: Ch 1, turn, (sc 2 sts tog) around to last st, sc in last st: 6 sts. Fasten off, leaving a long yarn end.
  21. Finishing: Use yarn end to gather up remaining sts. Use matching yarn ends to sew back seam. Weave in remaining yarn ends.
  22. Cross-Stitching: Follow chart by working cross-stitches around white band of Rows 14-18, making each cross-stitch so it covers a single sc st as in Fig1, beginning one stitch to left of back seam and repeating chart around band. Each sc st counts as one square on chart and is stitched with a single strand of red yarn and tapestry needle.
  23. Do not knot yarn on back of work. Instead, leave a short tail on back of work and hold in place. Weave tails and ends through several stitches as stitching progresses.
  24. Tassel: For tassel, cut ten 12-in. pieces each of red and white yarns. Tie them together in center with another 12-in. piece of yarn, holding ends of this piece out. Fold yarn pieces in half and tie again 1 in. down from center tie to form head of tassel. Trim ends to about 5 in. long. Using ends of yarn center tie, attach tassel to top center of hat.

SCARF: With green, ch 26.

  1. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across: 25 sts.
  2. Rows 2-18: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
  3. Row 19: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, * dc in next st, 3 tr in next st, dc in next st, sc in next st, repeat from * across. Fasten off.
  4. Row 20: Join white, ch 4 (counts as tr here and throughout), turn, tr in next st, * dc in next st, sc in next st, dc in next st, tr next 3 sts tog, repeat from * to last 2 sts, omitting last (tr next 3 sts tog), tr last 2 sts tog. Fasten off.
  5. Row 21: Join red, ch 1, turn, sc in each st across: 25 sc. Fasten off.
  6. Rows 22-26: Join white, ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Fasten off at end of Row 26.
  7. Row 27: Join red, ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. Fasten off.
  8. Row 28: Join white, ch 4, turn, tr in base of ch-4, * dc in next st, sc in next st, dc in next st, 3 tr in next st, repeat from * across, ending with 2 tr in last st: 37 sts. Fasten off.
  9. Row 29: Join green, ch 1, turn, sc in first st, * dc in next st, tr 3 tog in next st, dc in next st, sc in next st, repeat from * across: 25 sts.
  10. Rows 30-145: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (116 rows).
  11. Rows 146-156: Repeat Rows 19-29.
  12. Rows 157-174: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
  13. Finishing: With tapestry needle, weave in yarn ends.
  14. Cross-Stitching: Repeat as directed for hat, making red cross-stitches across white bands of Rows 22-26 at ends of scarf, beginning one stitch in from edge and repeating chart across bands.
  15. Fringe: Cut 52 strands each of white and red yarn, making each one 12 in. long. Hold two white and two red yarn strands together and fold in half. Using H hook, pull folds from back to front through one corner stitch. Insert yarn ends through loop formed and pull to tighten. Repeat between every other stitch across both ends of scarf. Trim ends.
