Instructions

GAUGE: In sc, 4 sts and 4 rows = 1 inch.

DIRECTIONS: Make one of each piece.

FRONT: With red, ch 46.

  • Row 1: Sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: 45 sc.
  • Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
  • Rows 3-57: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off at end of Row 57.

BACK: With yellow, ch 46. Repeat Front Rows 1-57.

BOTTOM: With black, ch 46.

  • Rows 1-13: Repeat Front Rows 1-13 with black. Fasten off at end of Row 13.

TOP FLAP: With blue, ch 46.

  • Rows 1-20: Repeat Front Rows 1-20 with blue.
  • Row 21 (buttonholes): Ch 1, turn, sc in first 7 sts, ch 4, sk next 4 sts, sc in next 24 sts, ch 4, sk next 4 sts, sc in last 7 sts.
  • Row 22: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st and ch across.
  • Row 23: Repeat Front Row 2. Fasten off.

YELLOW POCKET: With yellow, ch 21.

  • Row 1: Sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: 20 sc.
  • Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
  • Rows 3-20: Repeat Row 2.
  • Row 21 (buttonhole): Ch 1, turn, sc in first 8 sts, ch 4, sk next 4 sts, sc in last 8 sts.
  • Row 22: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st and ch across.
  • Row 23: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off.

ORANGE POCKET: With orange, ch 21. Repeat Yellow Pocket Rows 1-23.

GREEN POCKET: With green, ch 16.

  • Row 1: Sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: 15 sc.
  • Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
  • Rows 3-26: Repeat Row 2.
  • Row 27 (buttonhole): Ch 1, turn, sc in first 6 sts, ch 3, sk next 3 sts, sc in last 6 sts.
  • Row 28: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st and ch across.
  • Row 29: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off.

BLUE POCKET: With blue, ch 16. Repeat Green Pocket Rows 1-29.

GREEN SIDE: With green, ch 14.

  • Row 1: Sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: 13 sc.
  • Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
  • Rows 3-57: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off at end of Row 57.

BLUE SIDE: With blue, ch 14. Repeat Green Side Rows 1-57.

STRAP 1: With blue, ch 76.

  • Row 1: Sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: 75 sc.
  • Row 2: Join orange with sc in last st, sc in each sc across.
  • Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. Fasten off.
  • Row 4: Join green with sc in last st, sc in each sc across.
  • Row 5: Repeat Row 3 with green. Fasten off.

STRAP 2: With black, ch 76.

  • Row 1: Repeat Strap 1 Row 1 with black.
  • Rows 2-3: Repeat Strap 1 Rows 2-3 with red.
  • Rows 4-5: Repeat Strap 1 Rows 4-5 with yellow. Fasten off at end of Row 5.

FINISHING:

  • Pocket Finishing Round: Join black with a sl st in any side st of any pocket, sc in same st, sc in each st and end of each row around, working 3 sc in each corner, join with sl st in top of beg sc. Fasten off. Repeat on each pocket.
  • Adding Pockets: With buttonholes at upper edge of pockets, use black yarn to hand-stitch bottom and side edges of pockets to red front as shown Fig1. Repeat, adding orange and blue pockets to yellow back.
  • Assembly: With wrong sides of front and one side held together and one long edge matching, join black with sl st in top corner st; through both layers, sc in same st and sc in end of each row to bottom corner. Fasten off. Attach remaining side to opposite long side of front in same manner. Attach back to remaining long side edges of sides in same manner, making sure back and front are both right side up.
  • To add bottom: With bottom held in position along lower edges of front, join black with sl st in any st; through both layers, sc in same st and sc in each sc and end of each row across bottom of front, sides and back, join with sl st into top of beg sc. Fasten off.
  • To add top flap: With wrong sides of back and top flap held together and upper edge of back matching Row 1 of flap, join black with sl st in corner st; through both layers, sc in same st and sc in each sc across opposite corner of back; discontinue joining flap and continue to sc in each sc around top edge of front and sides; continuing around top flap, sc in end of each row, 3 sc in corner, sc in each sc, 3 sc in corner, sc in end of each row, join with sl st into top of beg sc. Fasten off.
  • Position a button under each buttonhole and hand-stitch in place with white thread.
  • Use black yarn to hand-sew ends of strap to top and bottom of back, adding a strap on each side at the corners.

FINISHED SIZE: Knapsack is 13 inches wide x 16 inches tall x 3-1/2 inches deep.
