GAUGE: Working in St st on size 7 needles, 16 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches.

Stitches Used:

Stockinette stitch: St st

  • Row 1 (RS): Knit across row.
  • Row 2 (WS): Purl across row.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2.
  • K 1, p 1 ribbing: K 1, p 1 rib
  • Every Row: K 1, p 1 across row.
  • Decrease: Dec
  • K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k across row to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1.

Increase: Inc

K 1 st without removing it from left needle, then k same st through back of loop and sl it off left needle.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. BACK: With smaller straight needles and red yarn, cast on 70 sts.
  2. Ribbing: Work in k 1, p 1 rib until ribbing measures 2 in., increasing 4 sts evenly spaced across last row. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn for sewing seam later: 74 sts.
  3. Lower body: Attach yellow yarn and change to larger needles.
  4. Work in St st until yellow section above ribbing measures about 7-1/2 in. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn: 74 sts.
  5. Upper body: Attach white yarn.
  6. Working in St st, bind off 2 sts at beginning of next two rows.
  7. Continuing to work in St st, dec 1 st at beginning and end of every k row until 24 sts remain.
  8. Place 24 sts on holder. Break yarn, leaving a tail of yarn.

FRONT: With smaller straight needles and red yarn, cast on 70 sts.

  1. Ribbing: Work in k 1, p 1 rib until ribbing measures 2 in., increasing 4 sts evenly spaced across last row. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn for sewing seam later: 74 sts.
  2. Lower body: Attach blue yarn and change to larger needles.
  3. Work in St st until blue section measures same as yellow section. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn: 74 sts.
  4.   Upper body: Attach white yarn.
  5. Working in St st, bind off 2 sts at beginning of next two rows.
  6. Continuing to work in St st, dec 1 st at beginning and end of every k row until 34 sts remain and ending with a p row.
  7. Neck shaping: Right Side: Row 1: K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 7, place next 14 sts on holder; then place the last 10 sts on a separate holder.
  8. Row 2: Working on sts on needle, p 2 tog, p across row.
  9. Row 3: K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k across.
  10. Repeat Rows 2-3 until 1 st remains.
  11. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn.
  12. Left Side: Row 1: Attach matching yarn and slip 10 sts on holder onto needle with RS facing, k across row to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1.
  13. Row 2: P across to last 2 sts, p 2 tog.
  14. Row 3: K across to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1.
  15. Repeat Rows 2-3 until 1 st remains.
  16. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn.

LEFT SLEEVE: With red yarn and smaller needles, cast on 32 sts.

  1. Ribbing: Work in k 1, p 1 rib until ribbing measures 4 in., increasing 4 sts evenly spaced across last row. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn: 36 sts.
  2. Lower sleeve: Attach white yarn and k across row with larger needles.
  3. Working in St st, inc 1 st at each end of every third k row six times.
  4. Then continuing to work in St st, inc 1 st at each end of every other k row five times, until white section above ribbing measures about 11-1/2 in: 58 sts. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn.
  5. Upper sleeve: Attach orange yarn.
  6. Working in St st, bind off 2 sts at beginning of next two rows.
  7.   Continuing to work in St st, dec 1 st at beginning and end of every k row until 8 sts remain.
  8. Place 8 sts on holder. Break yarn, leaving a tail of yarn.

RIGHT SLEEVE: Work as for left sleeve, using purple yarn instead of orange on upper sleeve.

NECK RIBBING: With circular needle and red yarn, pick up 8 sts from left sleeve; pick up 6 sts along left front; pick up 14 sts from holder; pick up 6 sts along right front; pick up 8 sts from right sleeve; pick up 24 sts from back holder. Place marker: 66 sts.

Work k 1, p 1 rib in rounds for 2 in.

Bind off loosely in k 1, p 1 rib. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn. Fold ribbing to inside of sweater, leaving 1 in. of ribbing exposed on outside of sweater. Sew the bound-off edge of ribbing to the inside neck of sweater.

FINISHING: With right sides together and using tails of yarn, sew sleeves to body of sweater. Sew underarm seams of sleeves and side seams in same way. Fasten off. Weave in loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Sweater is a Child’s size 8-10. Chest measures 34 inches and sweater is about 18-1/2 inches long.
