CHILD’S KNIT HAT AND MITTEN GAUGES: For hat, 18 sts and 24 rounds = 4 in. in Stockinette Stitch. For Mittens, 22 sts and 30 rounds = 4 in. in Stockinette Stitch. Make sure to check your gauge and adjust needle size to match gauge.
DIRECTIONS – KNIT HAT
Cast on 90 sts on circular needle; making sure work is not twisted, join to work in rounds. Place marker on needle at beginning of round. Also attach a short piece of contrasting yarn to the first stitch of the round.
RIBBING:
Rounds 1-36: [K1, p1] around: 90 sts.
Tuck the ribbing to the inside, aligning the cast-on edge with the stitches on the needle. Starting at the first stitch marked with the contrasting yarn, use the dpn to pick up 10 sts along the cast-on edge. Knit the picked-up sts together with the first 10 sts on the needle. Repeat this process 8 more times until all stitches have been joined.
BODY: (If desired, change yarn color for body and crown sections.)
Rounds 1-18: K around: 90 sts.
Round 19: K 43, k2tog, k 43, k2tog: 88 sts.

Round 4 (Eyelet Row): [K1, p1, k2tog, yo] around.
Rounds 5-7: [K1, p1] around.
Rounds 8-13: K around.
Bind off all stitches. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
CROCHETED I CORD: Using the crochet hook, chain 76 sts. Make a slip stitch in the second loop from hook and the next 75 crochet chains. Cut thread and tie off.
Weave the I cord through the eyelet row. Pull tight and tie in a bow.

Child’s Knit Hat and Mitten Set Photo by Country Woman magazine.

I saw this magazine in a doctors office and decided right then that I was going to subscribe. I came home and placed my order and then was so surprised when I could print off this pattern for the hat and mitten set. I can’t wait for my first copy to arrive.
Thank you.
