Instructions

  1. Before beginning our knit cardigan, download the chart.

BACK:

  1. Using smaller needles and green, cast on 54(58) sts.
  2. Rib Rows 1-10 (both sizes): Work in k 2, p 2 rib.

BODY:

  1. Rows 1-48(54): Change to larger needles, work in St st and begin to follow the downloadable chart (above). Start and end as indicated for your size, reading right to left for all knit rows and left to right for all purl rows.

SHOULDER SHAPING:

  1. Rows 49-50(55-56): Bind off first 4(4) sts, continuing in St st to follow chart for color placement across rows: 46(50) sts at end of Row 50(56).
  2. Rows 51-77(57-85): Working on the rem 46(50) sts and continuing in St st, dec 1 st at both ends of each RS row until 18(20) sts remain, working each row as follows: K 1, SKP, knit to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1. Bind off rem 18(20) sts.

RIGHT FRONT (RF):

  1. With smaller needles and green, cast on 28(30) sts.
  2. RF Rib Row 1: K 4 (for front band), (k 2, p 2) to end of row.
  3. RF Rib Row 2: (K 2, p 2) to last 4 sts, k 4.
  4. RF Rib Rows 3-10: Repeat Rows 1-2.
  5. RF Rows 1-49(1-55): Change to larger needles, work in St st rows, forming a garter st border on left edge by beginning each RS row with k 4 and ending each WS row with k 4.

SHOULDER SHAPING:

  1. RF Row 50(56): Bind off 4 sts, purl to last 4 sts, k 4: 24(26) sts.
  2. RF Row 51(57): Knit to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1: 23(25) sts.
  3. RF Row 52(58): Purl to last 4 sts, k 4.
  4. RF Rows 53-62(59-70): Repeat RF Rows 51-52: 18(19) sts at end of Row 61(69).
  5. RF Row 63(71): Bind off 5(5) sts, knit to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1: 12(13) sts.
  6. RF Row 64(72): Purl.
  7. RF Row 65(73): Knit to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1: 11(12) sts.
  8. RF Row 66(74): Purl.
  9. RF Row 67(75): K 1, SKP, knit to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1: 9(10) sts.
  10. RF Rows 68-75(76-83): Repeat RF Rows 64-67(72-75) twice: 3(4) sts at end of Row 75(83).
  11. RF Rows 76-77(84-85): Repeat RF Rows 64-65(74-75). Bind off last 2(2) sts.

LEFT FRONT (LF):

  1. With smaller needles and green, cast on 28(30) sts.
  2. LF Rib Row 1: (K 2, p 2) to last 4 sts, k 4 (for zipper band).
  3. LF Rib Row 2: K 4, (k 2, p 2) to end of row.
  4. LF Rib Rows 3-10: Repeat Rows 1-2.
  5. LF Body: LF Rows 1-48(1-54): Change to larger needles, work in St st, forming a garter st border on right edge by beginning each WS row with k 4 and ending each RS row with k 4.
  6. LF Row 1 and all odd-numbered rows through Row 47(53): Knit.
  7. LF Row 2 and all even-numbered rows through Row 48(54): K 4, purl rem sts.

LF SHOULDER SHAPING:

  1. LF Row 49(55): Bind off 4 sts, knit rem sts: 24(26) sts.
  2. LF Row 50(56): K 4, purl rem sts.
  3. LF Row 51(57): K 1, SKP, knit rem sts: 23(25) sts.
  4. LF Rows 52-61(58-69): Repeat LF Rows 50-51(56-57): 18(19) sts at end of Row 61(87).
  5. LF Row 62(70): Bind off 5(5) sts, purl rem sts: 13(14) sts.
  6. LF Row 63(71): K 1, SKP, knit rem sts: 12(13) sts.
  7. LF Row 64(72): Purl.
  8. LF Row 65-66(73-74): Repeat LF Rows 63-64(71-72): 11(12) sts.
  9. LF Row 67(75): K 1, SKP, knit to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1: 9(10) sts.
  10. LF Row 68(76): Purl.
  11. LF Rows 69-76(77-84): Repeat LF Rows 65-68(73-76) twice: 3(4) sts at end of Row 75(83).
  12. LF Row 77(85): Repeat LF Row 63(75). Bind off last 2(2) sts.

SLEEVES:

  1. With smaller needles and green, cast on 32(36) sts.
  2. S Rib Row 1: (K 2, p 2) across.
  3. S Rib Rows 2-10: Repeat Row 1.
  4. S Rows 1-6 (both sizes): Change to larger needles, work in St st.
  5. S Rows 7-50(7-58): Work in St st, inc 1 in the first and last st in Row 7 and six times in every sixth row thereafter (both sizes): 46(50) sts at end of Row 43.
  6. S Rows 51-52(59-60): Bind off 5 sts at beg of each row, work remainder of row in St st: 36(40) sts at end of Row 52(60).
  7. S Row 53(61): K 1, SKP, knit to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1: 34(38) sts.
  8. S Row 54(62): Purl.
  9. S Rows 55-78(63-88): Repeat S Rows 53-54(61-62): 12(14) sts at end of Row 77(87).
  10. S Row 79(89): Repeat S Row 53(61): 10(12) sts. Bind off rem sts.
  11. Work second sleeve the same.

FINISHING:

  1. Sew fronts and back to sleeves at shoulders. Sew sleeve and side underarm seams.
  2. Neck ribbing: With smaller needles and green, from right side pick up 4(4) sts across front band, 9(10) sts across front neck, 8(8) sts across sleeves, 16(18) sts across back neck, 8(8) sts across sleeves, 9(10) sts across front neck, 4(4) sts across front band: 58(62) sts.
  3. Rows 1, 3 and 5: K 4, (p 2, k 2) across to last 6 sts, p 2, k 4.
  4. Rows 2, 4 and 6: K 4, (k 2, p 2) across to last 6 sts, k 6. Bind off in ribbing. Weave in all yarn ends. If desired, block by steaming on wrong side with steam iron. Do not press ribbing.
  5. Insert zipper at center front, folding back upper edges of zipper even with end of zipper teeth and machine-straight stitching or hand-backstitching in place 3/8 inch from opening edges. (Zipper of size 4 sweater will begin below neckline and end even with lower edges of sweater front.)

Finished size: Directions are for a Child’s size 2. Changes for size 4 are in parentheses. Garment chest measurements are 24(26) inches and back lengths are 14-1/2(15-1/2).
