GAUGE: Each shell, sc is 1-3/4 inches wide.

SPECIAL STITCHES: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

CHANGING COLORS: Sc Color Change: Work with first color until 2 lps remain on hk, drop first color to back of work, with second color, draw through remaining 2 lps on hk.

DC Color Change Colors are changed in each row while completing last st of first color. Join second color as follows: Lay the second color yarn along the top of the previous row and work the last few stitches over it. Work the last st of first color as a normal dc until 2 lps remain on the hk, yo with second color and draw second color through; drop first color and leave it at back of work.

SHELL (SH): (Dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in next st.

DIRECTIONS: 

AFGHAN: Afghan rows are worked top to bottom.

  1. With white, ch 162.
  2. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: 161 sc.
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, sk next st, * SH in next st, sk next st, sc in next st, sk next st, repeat from * to last 3 sts, SH in next st, sk next st, sc in last st: 40 SHs.
  4. Row 3: Ch 4, turn, dc in base of ch-4, * sc in second dc of next SH, SH in next sc, repeat from * across to last SH, sc in second dc of last SH, (dc, ch 1, dc) in last sc: 39 SHs.
  5. Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in first dc, * SH in next sc, sc in second dc of next SH, repeat from * to last SH, ending SH in last sc, sc in third ch of turning ch-4.
  6. Rows 5-74: Repeat Rows 3-4.
  7. Row 75: Repeat Row 3.
  8. Row 76: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc and each dc across. Fasten off. Weave in yarn ends
  9. Fringe: Cut strands of white yarn, making each strand 12 inches long. Hold three yarn strands together and fold them in half. Using the crochet hook, pull the fold from back to front in the end of one row on the short edge of afghan. Insert yarn ends through loop formed, and pull to tighten. Repeat in ends of rows on both short edges of the afghan. Evenly trim fringe ends.

CANDY CANES (Make 8): With red, ch 9.

  1. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across: 8 sts.
  2. Rows 2-3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, changing to white in last st of Row 3.
  3. Rows 4-6: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, changing to red in last st of Row 6.
  4. Rows 7-9: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, changing to white in last st of Row 9.
  5. Rows 10-18: Repeat Rows 4-9, then Rows 4-6, changing to red in last sts of Rows 12 and 18 and white in Row 15.
  6. Row 19: Ch 1, turn, sl st in first st, sc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in next st, dc in each of last 4 sts.
  7. Row 20: Ch 3, turn, dc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, sl st in last st.
  8. Row 21: Repeat Row 19, changing to white in last st.
  9. Row 22: Ch 3, turn, dc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, sl st in last st.
  10. Row 23: Ch 1, turn, sl st in first st, sc in each of next 4 sts, hdc in next st, dc in each of last 2 sts.

  20. Referring to Candy Cane Afghan Fig. 1, use matching yarn to sew four candy canes spaced evenly at a slight angle across each short end of the afghan.

FINISHED SIZE: Afghan is about 46 x 71 inches plus fringe.
