DIRECTIONS: Before you begin, refer to gauge, patterns/stitches used, etc.

BAG: With size 11 needles, starting at upper edge, cast on 41 sts. Work in k 1, p 1 twisted rib for 1 inch, ending with a WS row.

  1. Row 1 (RS): P-b 1, k-b 1; work first row of Pattern 2 across next 9 sts; k-b 1; work first row of Pattern 1 across next 17 sts; k-b 1; work first row of Pattern 2 across next 9 sts; k-b 1, p-b 1.
  2. Row 2 (WS): P-b 1, k-b 1; work second row of Pattern 2 across next 9 sts; k-b 1; work second row of Pattern 1 across next 17 sts; k-b 1; work second row of Pattern 2 across next 9 sts; k-b 1, p-b 1.
  3. Continue to work as established until piece measures 10 inches, ending with a WS row.
  4. Change to Reversed Wheat Ear Cable and continue as established until the piece measures 21 inches, ending with a WS row.
  5. Work in k 1, p 1 twisted rib for 1 inch, ending with a WS row. Bind off in rib.
  6. FINISHING: Lining: Block piece. Use as a pattern to cut a matching-size piece of fabric for the lining.
  7. Fold the knit piece in half so the short ends meet and use tapestry needle and matching yarn to hand-sew the long sides together, leaving the top open.
  8. With right sides together, fold the fabric in half so the short ends meet. With matching thread and 1/4-inch seams, machine-sew the side edges, leaving the top open. Leave wrong side out.
  9. Turn top 1 inch along the open edge to the wrong side and insert lining inside purse. With matching thread, hand-stitch folded top edge to inside of purse just below the ribbing.
  10. Closure: Sew a large button to the front of the bag about 1 inch down from the center top edge.
  11. Crochet a long enough chain to loop around button. Attach both ends of chain to top of bag at center back.
  12. Handle: Cut five 2-yard lengths of yarn. Holding the lengths together as if they were one, tie one end to a doorknob or ask someone to hold the end. Twist yarn until it is very tight.
  13. Carefully fold the twisted strand in half. Let go of the folded end so the two halves twist together.
  14. Tie a knot about 2 inches in from each end of twisted yarn. Cut the folded end and let it untwist so the end looks like a tassel. The opposite end will already look like a tassel.
  15. With matching yarn and tapestry needle, stitch handle to sides of bag.

FINISHED SIZE: Excluding handle, purse measures about 10-1/2 inches high x 9-1/2 inches wide.
