GAUGE: When working in St st with larger needles, 18 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches.

SPECIAL STITCHES:

  • P-wise: Insert the needle as though to purl. Slip all sts P-wise unless otherwise indicated.

STITCHES USED:

MOSS STITCH VARIATION: Moss st var

  • When working over an odd number of sts:
  • Row 1: K 1, p 1, rep from * across row, ending with k 1.
  • Rows 2 and 3: P 1, k 1, rep from * across row, ending with p 1.
  • Row 4: Rep Row 1.
  • Rep these four rows for pattern.

STOCKINETTE STITCH: St st

  • Row 1 (RS): Knit.
  • Row 2 (WS): Purl.
  • Rep Rows 1 and 2.
  • When working in rounds, knit all rows.

GARTER STITCH: Garter St

  • Every row: Knit.
  • K 1, P 1 RIBBING: K 1, p 1 rib
  • Row 1: (K 1, p 1) across row, k 1 (if needed to finish row).
  • Row 2: K the k sts, p the p sts.
  • Rep Row 2 for pattern.

PINWHEEL PATTERN (Pinwheel Patt): Multiple of 16 sts. The symbol § indicates center of the row, necessary to complete the sweater front pattern rows.

  • Row 1 (RS): K 6, p 1, k 1, § p 1, k 1, p 6.
  • Rows 2 and all even-numbered (WS) rows through Row 36: K the k sts, p the p sts.
  • Row 3: K 5, p 1, k 1, p 1 §, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 5.
  • Row 5: K 4, (p 1, k 1) twice §, (p 1, k 1) twice, p 4.
  • Row 7: K 3, (p 1, k 1) twice, p 1 §, k 1, (p 1, k 1) twice, p 3.
  • Row 9: *K 2, (p 1, k 1) twice, p 2, rep from * across.
  • Row 11: (K 1, p 1) twice, k 1, p 3 §, k 3, (p 1, k 1) twice, p 1.
  • Row 13: (P 1, k 1) twice, p 4 §, k 4, (p 1, k 1) twice, p 1.

DIRECTIONS: BACK: With smaller needles, loosely cast on 50(52,54) sts.

  1. Rows 1-10: Work in garter st.
  2. Row 11 (RS): With larger needles, k 1(2,3); work Row 1 of Pinwheel Patt three times across row; k 1(2,3).
  3. Row 12: K 1, p 0(1,2); work Row 2 of Pinwheel Patt three times across row; p 0(1,2), k 1.
  4. Row 13: K 1(2,3); work Row 3 of Pinwheel Patt three times across row; k 1(2,3).
  5. Row 14 and all even-numbered (WS) rows: K 1, p 0(1,2); work next row of Pinwheel Patt, rep two more times across row; p 0(1,2), k 1.
  6. Continue to work in est pattern, rep Rows 1-36 of Pinwheel Patt in order (in Row 47, Row 1 of Pinwheel Patt will be worked again), until piece measures 5-1/4(5-1/2,5-3/4) inches from beginning.
  7. Armhole Shaping: At beginning of next 2 rows, bind off 3 sts, then dec 1 st at both sides every other row three times, maintaining est Pinwheel Patt: 38(40,42) sts. Continue to work even until armhole measures 4(4-1/4,4-1/2) inches. Place rem sts on stitch holder.
  8. LEFT FRONT: With smaller needles, loosely cast on 30(31,32) sts.
  9. Rows 1-10: Work in garter st, slipping first st of every even-numbered (WS) row P-wise.
  10. Row 11 (RS): With larger needles, k 1(2,3); work Row 1 of Pinwheel Patt over next 24 sts (work pattern once, then rep pattern to §), k 5.
  11. Row 12: Sl 1, k 4, work Row 2 of Pinwheel Patt over next 24 sts as in Row 11, ending with p 0(1,2), k 1.
  12. Continue to work in est pattern (except rep row 9 across), repeating Rows 1-36 of Pinwheel Patt in order until piece measures 5-1/4(5-1/2,5-3/4) inches from beginning, ending with a RS row.
  13. Armhole Shaping: At beginning of next row, bind off 3 sts, then dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row three times, maintaining est Pinwheel Patt: 24(25,26) sts at end of shaping.
  14. Continue to work even until armhole is 3(3-1/4,3-1/2) inches, ending with a RS row.
  15. Neck Shaping: Row 1 (WS): Bind off 5 sts (garter st border for all sizes), work rem sts of row in est pattern: 19(20,21) sts.
  16. Row 2: Work in est pattern.
  17. Row 3: Bind off 5 sts (all sizes), work rem sts of row in est pattern: 14(15,16).
  18. Continuing to work in pattern, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row three times (all sizes): 11(12,13) sts.
  19. Left Shoulder Joining: When length of front  matches back, place 11(12,13) left back shoulder sts on smaller needle. Hold smaller needle with back stitches and larger needle with left shoulder sts parallel with RS together and work a plain bind-off as follows: Hold both pieces in left hand, then * knit first st on each needle simultaneously. Work next two sts together in same manner. Slip first st over second one, binding off one st. Rep from * across row. Place rem st on stitch holder with rem back sts. (A ridge will be produced on wrong side of joining.)
  20. RIGHT FRONT: With smaller needles, loosely cast on 30(31,32) sts.
  21. Rows 1-10: Work in garter st, slipping first st of every odd-numbered (RS) row P-wise.
  22. Row 11(RS): Sl 1, k 4, work Row 1 of Pinwheel Patt over next 24 sts (work pattern from § to end, then work entire pattern once).
  23. Row 12: With larger needles, k 1, p 0(1,2); work Row 2 of Pinwheel Patt over next 24 sts as in Row 11, k 5.
  24. Continue to work in est pattern, (except rep Row 9 of pattern across) repeating Rows 1-36 of Pinwheel Patt in order until piece measures 5-1/4(5-1/2,5-3/4) inches from beginning, ending with a WS row.
  25. Armhole Shaping: At beg of next row, bind off 3 sts, then dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row three times, maintaining est Pinwheel Patt: 24(25,26) sts at end of shaping.
  26. Continue to work even until armhole measures 3(3-1/4,3-1/2) inches (same as left front), ending with a WS row.
  27. Neck Shaping: Row 1 (RS): Bind off 5 sts (garter st border—for all sizes), work rem sts of row in est pattern: 19(20,21) sts.
  28. Row 2: Work in est pattern.
  29. Row 3: Bind off 5 sts (all sizes), work rem sts of row in est pattern 14(15,16).
  30. Continuing to work in pattern, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row three times (all sizes): 11(12,13) sts.
  31. Right Shoulder Joining: Leaving the one left front st and 16 back sts (all sizes) on stitch holder, place rem 11(12,13) right back shoulder sts on smaller needle. Hold smaller needle with back stitches and larger needle with right shoulder sts parallel with RS together and work a plain bind-off as directed for joining left shoulder.
  32. NECK RIBBING: Row 1: Using smaller needles and with RS facing, skip border sts and join yarn at right front edge; pick up and knit 5(6,7) sts in second group of bound off sts, 5 sts (all sizes) along right neck edge, 18 sts (all sizes) from stitch holder,  5 sts (all sizes) along left neck edge, 5(6,7) sts in closest group of bound off left front sts: 38(40,42).
  33. Row 2: P 1, * k 1, p 1, rep from * across.
  34. Work two more rows of k 1, p 1 rib.
  35. Bind off loosely.
  36. SLEEVES (Make two): With smaller needles, loosely cast on 19(21,23) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 1 inch (all sizes).
  37. Change to larger needles and work even in St st for 1 inch, ending with WS row.
  38. Row 1 (RS): Knit, inc 8 sts (all sizes) evenly spaced: 27(29,31) sts.
  39. Row 2: K 1, purl to last st, k 1.
  40. Row 3: Knit.
  41. Rows 4-5: Rep Rows 2-3, inc 1 st (all sizes) at both ends of Row 5: 29(31,33).
  42. Row 6: Rep Row 2.
  43. Rows 7-12: Keeping first st at each edge in garter st and increasing 1 st at each end of Row 9, work six rows of Moss st var: 31(33,35) sts at end of Row 9.
  44. Continue by alternating six rows of St st with six rows of Moss st var and inc 1 st at each end of every fourth row three more times: 37(39,41) sts at end of inc.
  45. Work in est pattern without further inc until sleeve measures 5-1/4(5-3/4,6-3/4) inches.
  46. Sleeve Cap Shaping: At beginning of next two rows, bind off 3 sts, then dec 1 st at both edges every other row three times. Bind off rem 25(27,29) sts.
  47. FINISHING: Weave in all yarn ends.
  48. Sew sleeves into armholes, then sew underarm seams of body and sleeve.
  49. Hand-stitch buttons with matching thread evenly spaced on front band. Add snap to wrong side of band under each one.
  50. CAP: Beginning at lower edge of cap back (above lower border) with larger needles, cast on 20 sts.
  51. Base Row: Sl 1, p 18, k 1.
  52. Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, k 1, work Row 1 of Pinwheel Patt over next 16 sts, k 2.
  53. Row 2: Sl 1, p 1, work Row 2 of Pinwheel Patt, p 1, k 1.
  54. Rows 3-35: Continue to work rows of Pinwheel Patt in order, working the 2 edge sts as in Rows 1 and 2 above.
  55. Row 36: P 2 tog, work Row 36 of Pinwheel Patt, p 2 tog: 18 sts.
  56. Adding Side Sts: Pick up 18 sts along right edge of cap back, one in each sl st of border edging, turn: 36 sts.
  57. Row 1: Sl 1; k 18, dec 2 sts evenly spaced (17 sts on needle); work next 16 sts in Row 1 of Pinwheel Patt, k 1; pick up 18 sts along left edge of cap: 52 sts.
  58. Row 2: Sl 1; dec 2 sts evenly spaced within first 18 sts of pattern, work three reps of Row 2 of Pinwheel Patt; k 1: 50 sts.
  59. Rows 3-21: Work in est pattern, sl first st and knitting last st.
  60. Brim Shaping: Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, knit rem sts.
  61. Row 2: Sl 1, k 33, turn.
  62. Row 3: Sl 1, k 15, turn.
  63. Row 4: Sl 1, k 19, turn.
  64. Rows 5-10: Sl 1, k to 4 sts past previous turn, turn.
  65. Row 11: Sl 1, k 45, turn.
  66. Row 12: Sl 1, k 47, turn.
  67. Row 13: Sl 1, k 49, turn.
  68. Bind off loosely in purl, keeping last st on needle, turn to work across lower edge of cap.
  69. Lower Border: With RS facing, pick up 41 more sts across lower edge of cap.
  70. Row 1: Sl 1, k 11, k 2 tog, k 14, k 2 tog, k 12: 40 sts.
  71. Row 2 (Eyelet Row): Sl 1, k 2, (yo, k 5, k 2 tog) twice, yo, k 4, (k 2 tog, yo, k 5) twice, k 2 tog, yo, k 3: 41 sts.
  72. Row 3: Knit.
  73. Row 4: Sl 1, inc 1 in next st, knit to 2 sts from end, inc 1 in next st, k 1.
  74. Rows 5-8: Rep Rows 3-4 twice.
  75. Row 9: Rep Row 3.
  76. Bind off loosely in purl. Weave in yarn ends. Thread ribbon through eyelets to tie in front.

FINISHED SIZE: Directions are for an Infant size 6 months. Changes for sizes 12 months and 18 months are in parentheses. Actual chest measurements are 22(23,24) inches. Cap is one size to fit most babies.
