Instructions

GAUGE: When working in sc with a size G/6 hk, 18 scs and 16 rows = 4 inches.

DIRECTIONS:

HAT: With off-white, ch 61 (remembering that the lp on hk does not count as one of the chs); sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across row: count 60 scs.

  1. Row 1: Ch 1, turn; sl st in back lp only of first 10 sts, sc in back lp only of each remaining st.
  2. Row 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in back lp only of each st until 10 sts remain, sl st in back lp only of remaining 10 sts.
  3. Rows 3-4: Rep Rows 1 and 2. Fasten off at end of Row 4. Turn work.
  4. Rows 5-8: Join blue with a sl st in back lp of first st, sl st in back lp of next 9 sts; sc in back lp of each remaining st. Rep Rows 2-4 with this new color.
  5. Rows 9-12: With mauve, rep Rows 5-8.
  6. Rows 13-16: With green, rep Rows 5-8.
  7. Rows 17-80: Rep Rows 5-8, changing colors in the established order until there are a total of five stripes of each color. Do not fasten off at the end of Row 80.
  8. Joining Row: Sl st first and last rows together to form a tube. Fasten off. Use tapestry needle to weave in loose ends.
  9. Thread needle with any of the four colors of yarn and pull yarn through sts around edge at narrow end of tube. Pull yarn tight to close this end and tie yarn ends.

POM-POM:

  • Center a 10-inch length of off-white yarn lengthwise across cardboard strip. Hold one strand of each color yarn together and use as one. Beginning and ending 1/4 inch from each end of strip, wrap yarn around tie and 1-inch width of strip. Each wrap should be smooth but not tight and should lay next to previous wrap.
  • Working back and forth in layers, continue wrapping strip for four layers. Cut yarn. Carefully fold cardboard in half lengthwise and pull it out without removing tie. Knot the ends of tie with a double knot, pulling them tight so loops form a donut shape. Cut loops along the outermost edge of donut. Trim ends so pom-pom measures about 2-1/2 inches in diameter. Sew to top of hat.

FINISHED SIZE: Hat with pom-pom is about 15 inches long x 20 inches around. One size fits most. The cuff can be turned up to change the length of hat.
