HELPFUL ABBREVIATION GUIDE

ch(s): chain(s)
dc(s): double crochet(s)

[ ]: Instructions between brackets are repeated as directed.

Gauge: Three dcs = 1 inch. Small variation in gauge will change the finished size a bit.

HOT PAD:

  1. Round 1: With white, ch 4, dc in fourth ch from hk 11 times, join with a sl st in top of third ch: 12 dcs.
  2. Round 2: Ch 3 for first dc, dc in same st, work 2 dcs in each dc around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 24 dcs.
  3. Round 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next dc, [work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in next dc] around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 36 dcs.
  4. Round 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of the next two dcs, [work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in each of the next two dcs] around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 48 dcs.
  5. Round 5: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of the next three dcs, [work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in each of the next three dcs] around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 60 dcs.
  6. Round 6: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of the next four dcs, [work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in each of the next four dcs] around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 72 dcs. Fasten off.
  7. Repeat to make another.

JOINING:

  1. Hold both crocheted pieces together with wrong sides facing and edges matching. Attach white and working through both thicknesses, sc in any outside st, sc in same st, sc in next five sts, [work two scs, in next st, sc in each of next five sts] around, join with a sl st in beginning st. Fasten off.

HANGING LOOP:

  1. With white, sc over plastic ring 20 times, join with a sl st in beginning sc. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn.
  2. Thread yarn end onto yarn or tapestry needle and sew hanging loop to edge of hot pad.

STRAWBERRY (MAKES TWO):

  1. Row 1: With red, ch 5, sc in second ch from hk and in each remaining ch across, ch 1, turn: 4 scs.
  2. Row 2: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn: 4 scs.
  3. Row 3: Work 2 scs in first st, sc across to last sc, work 2 scs in last sc, ch 1, turn: 6 scs.
  4. Row 4: Repeat Row 2: 6 scs.
  5. Row 5: Repeat Row 3: 8 scs.
  6. Rows 6-7: Repeat Row 2: 8 scs.
  7. Row 8: Sc first 2 sts tog, sc across to last two sts, sc last to sts tog, ch 1, turn: 6 scs.
  8. Row 9: Work 2 scs in first sc, sc across to last st, work 2 scs in last st: 8 scs.
  9. Working around, sc evenly in ends of each row, work 2 scs in each corner, join with a sl st in beginning st. Fasten off.

LEAVES (MAKES SIX):

  1. With green, ch 7, sc in second ch from hk, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next three chs, ch 3, join with a sl st in first ch made. Fasten off.

SEEDS:

  1. Thread yarn or tapestry needle with black. Make a single long stitch where desired to add each seed to berry.

FINISHING:

  1. With matching yarn, hand-tack strawberry and leaves to one side of hot pad as in photo.
  2. Weave in all loose ends.
