Instructions

GAUGE: Each knit or crocheted block is about 7 inches square. Slight variation in gauge will change the finished size of the blanket.

Directions:

CROCHET BLOCK (make six): With white yarn, ch 4, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

  1. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 2 dcs in ring, [ch 2, work 3 dcs in ring] three times, ch 2, join with sl st in third ch of first ch-3: four 3-dc groups and four ch-2 sps.
  2. Round 2: Sl st into next ch-2 sp, ch 3, work 2 dcs in same ch-sp, ch 2 for corner ch-sp, work 3 dcs in same ch-sp, * ch 2, work (3 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs) in next ch-sp; repeat from * around, ch 2, join with a sl st in top of first ch-3.
  3. Round 3: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 3, work 2 dcs in same ch-sp, ch 2, work 3 dcs in same ch-sp, * ch 2, work 3 dcs in next ch-sp, ch 2, work (3 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs) in corner ch-sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat with ch 2, work 3 dcs in next ch-sp, ch 2, join with sl st in top of first ch-3.
  4. Round 4: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 3, work 2 dcs in same ch-sp, ch 2, work 3 dcs in same ch-sp, * [ch 2, work 3 dcs in next ch-sp] twice, ch 2, work (3 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs) in corner ch-sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat with [ch 2, work 3 dcs in next ch-sp] twice, ch 2, join with sl st in top of first ch-3.
  5. Round 5: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 3, work 2 dcs in same ch-sp, ch 2, work 3 dcs in same ch-sp, * [ch 2, work 3 dcs in next ch-sp] three times, ch 2, work (3 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs) in corner ch-sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat with [ch 2, work 3 dcs in next ch-sp] three times, ch 2, join with sl st in top of first ch-3. Fasten off.
  6. Edging: Attach variegated yarn with sl st in any corner ch-sp, ch 3 for first dc; dc around, working three dcs in each corner, 1 dc between each dc and 1 dc in each ch-sp, join with sl st in top of first ch-3. Fasten off.

KNIT BLOCK (make six): With white yarn, cast on 25 sts. K 1, p 1 across row to last st, k 1: 25 sts.

  1. Repeat until piece is square. Bind off last row in pattern. Fasten off.
  2. Edging: Attach variegated yarn with sl st in any st, ch 3, work 1 dc in every other st or end of row around, working 3 dcs in each corner, join with a sl st in top of first ch-3. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY: Place blocks right side up in four rows of three, alternating knit and crocheted blocks in each row.

Thread tapestry needle with variegated yarn. Stitching through back loops of edging only, whipstitch side edges of blocks in each row together in planned order with right sides facing and ends even. See Blanket Stitch for illustration. Then join bottom of first row to top of second row and bottom of second row to top of third row in same way.

EDGING: Join variegated yarn with sl st in any corner of edging, ch 3, dc in same sp; dc around, working 1 dc in each st and 2 dcs in each remaining corner, join with sl st in top of first ch-3. Fasten off. Weave in all loose ends.

ANIMAL MOTIFS (optional): Cut six animal motifs from fabric. Press raw edges under and center a motif on right side of each knit block. Hand-tack each to block with matching thread.

Use embroidery needle and unseparated coordinating floss to outline and add details to each with stem stitch. See Fig. 1 for stitch illustration.

FINISHED SIZE: Blanket measures 22-1/2 inches wide x 29-1/2 inches long.
