Instructions

GAUGE: Each motif measures about 13 inches square. Slight variations in gauge will change the finished size of the afghan a bit.

Special Stitches: To make a column, ch 5 or number of chs indicated, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk. Subsequent stitches are either worked in the three side chs or in the top or base of the dcs.

DIRECTIONS: Join new yarn with sl knot on hk and RS facing unless directed otherwise.

FIRST MOTIF:

  1. Round 1: With soft white, ch 4, work 2 hdcs (center) in fourth ch from hk, * [ch 8, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk] twice, ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk; working back on opposite side toward center hdcs, sl st in fifth ch of previous column made, ch 2, sk 2 chs, sl st in next ch, ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk, sl st in base of dc of next column on opposite side, ch 2, sk 2 chs, sl st in next ch, work 3 hdcs in first ch of round; repeat from * three more times, ending last repeat with ch 2, sk 2 chs, sl st in next ch, join with a sl st in fourth ch of beginning ch-4. Fasten off.
  2. Round 2: Join rust with a sl st in center hdc of any 3-hdc group, * [work 3 dcs in next ch-2 sp, sl st in first ch of next column ch-3, ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk, sk next ch of same ch-3, sl st in next ch] twice, ch 2, sl st between third and fourth dcs, ch 2, [sl st in first ch of next column ch-3, ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk, sk next ch of same ch-3, sl st in next ch, work 3 dcs in next ch-2 sp] twice, sl st in center hdc of 3-hdc group; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in beginning st. Fasten off.
  3. Round 3: Join gold with a sl st in first ch of second to last column ch-3 made in Round 2, ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk, sk next ch, sl st in next ch, * dc in each of next 3 dcs, sl st in each of next 3 chs of each of the next 2 columns to form an open square, dc in next 3 dcs, sl st in first ch of next column ch-3, ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk, sk next ch of same column, sl st in next ch, ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk, sk next dc of same column, sl st in next dc, ch 2, sk next sl st, sl st in center sl st, ch 2, sl st in base of next dc, ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk, sk next dc of same column, sl st in third ch of same column, ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk, sk next ch, sl st in next ch; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in beginning st.   4. Round 4: Join brown with a sl st in first ch of first column ch-3 in Round 3, * ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk, sk next ch, sl st in next ch, [dc in each of the next 3 dcs] twice to form an open square, sl st in first ch of next column ch-3, ch 5, work 1 dc in fourth and fifth chs from hk, sk next ch, sl st in next ch, ch 3, dc in next 2 dcs of same column, sl st in each of next 3 chs of next column ch-3, work 3 dcs in each of next 2 ch-2 sps, sl st in each of next 3 chs of next column ch-3, dc in base of first 2 dcs of next column, ch 3, sl st in first ch of same column ch-3; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in beginning st. Fasten off.
  5. Round 5: Join soft white with a sc in first sl st of last 3 sl sts of Round 4, sc in next 2 sl sts, sc in next 2 dcs and in first ch of ch-3, tr in base of next 2 dcs of next column, ch 4, sl st in each of the 3 chs of same column ch-3, * sl st in 3 chs of next column ch-3 to form an open square, ch 4, tr in next 2 dcs of same column, sc in top of next ch-3, sc in next 2 dcs, sc in next 3 sl sts, sc in next 6 dcs, sc in next 3 sl sts, sc in next 2 dcs, sc in first ch of next ch-3, tr in base of next 2 dcs of next column, ch 4, sl st in each of the 3 chs of same column; repeat from * around, ending last repeat with sc in next 6 scs, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
  6. Round 6: Join rust with a sc in first tr of Round 5, sc in next tr, sc in first ch of ch-4, * tr in next sl st, sk next sl st, dtr in next 2 sl sts, sk next sl st, tr in next sl st, sc in top of next ch-4, sc in next 22 sts, sc in first ch of next ch-4; repeat from * around to first sc, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
  7. Round 7: Join gold with a sc in first sc of Round 6, sc in next 2 scs, * hdc in next tr,  (dc and tr) in next dtr, ch 1, (tr and dc) in next dtr, hdc in next tr, sc in next 24 scs; repeat from * around to first sc, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
  8. Round 8: Join brown with a sl st in a corner ch-1 of Round 7, ch 2 for first hdc, work 2 hdcs in same ch-sp, * hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 24 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, work 3 hdcs in next corner ch-1 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat with hdc in next 3 sts, join with a sl st in top of first ch-2. Fasten off.
  9. Round 9: Join rust with a sl st in first hdc of a Round 8 3-hdc corner, ch 3 for first dc, dc in same hdc, * work 3 dcs in next hdc, work 2 dcs in next hdc, dc in next 7 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next 14 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 7 sts, work 2 dcs in next hdc; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in top of first ch-3. Fasten off.
  10. Round 10: Join gold with a sl st in a first dc of a Round 9 3-dc corner,  * ch 7,  sk next st, sc in next st, [ch 3, sk next st, sc in next st] eight times, ch 3, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st, [ch 3, sk next st, sc in next st] around to first dc of next 3-dc corner; repeat from * around, ch 3, join with a sl st in first ch of beginning ch-7. Fasten off.

ALL OTHER MOTIFS (make 19):

  1. Rounds 1-9: Repeat Rounds 1-9 of first motif. Join motifs as they are worked, joining them in five rows with four motifs in each row.
  2. Joining Round: Join gold with a sl st in first dc of Round 9 3-dc corner, ch 7, sk next st, sc in next st, [ch 3, sk next st, sc in next st] eight times, ch 3, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st, [ch 3, sk next st, sc in next st] around to ch-7 corner, ch 3, sc in fourth ch of right side of corner ch-7 of finished motif, ch 3, sk next st of working motif, sc in next st, * [ch 1, sc in center ch of next ch-3 of finished motif, ch 1, sk next st of working motif, sc in next st] eight times, ch 1, sc in center ch of next ch-3 of finished motif, ch 1, sk next 2 sts of working motif, sc in next st, [ch 1, sc in center ch of next ch-3 of finished motif, ch 1, sk next st of working motif, sc in next st] to ch-7 corner, ch 3, sc in fourth ch of corner ch-7 of finished motif, ch 3, sk next st of working motif, sc in next st; for two adjoining sides and corner joinings, repeat  from * once, continue to follow instructions for Round 10 of first motif to complete unfinished motif. Fasten off.

BORDER:

  1. Round 1: Join brown with a sc in any corner ch-7 of afghan, sc around afghan, working 7 scs in each ch-7 sp, 2 scs in each ch-3 sp and 1 sc in each motif joining sp, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
  2. Round 2: Join gold with a sc in first sc of any corner ch-7 of Border Round 1, sc around afghan, working 3 scs in center sc of each ch-7 sp, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
  3. Round 3: Join rust with a sc in any sc of Border Round 2, ch 1, * insert hk from back to front in next sc and sl st, ch 1, insert hk from front to back in next sc and sl st, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in first sc, turn.
  4. Round 4: With WS facing, insert hk in sc of Round 2 directly below sl st joining of Border Round 3, sl st in each sc of Border Round 2 around, join with a sl st in first st of Round 4. Fasten off.
  5. Use tapestry or yarn needle to weave in all loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Afghan is about 54 inches wide x 67 inches long.
