Gelatin Stands Test of Time
BELIEVE IT or not, Jell-O was introduced way back in 1897. Now, more than a century later, gelatin salads and desserts are still popular at parties, potlucks and family meals. With that in mind, we’ve made "Gelatin Greats" the focus of Country Woman’s new national recipe contest.
We’re expecting a wide field of colorful refreshing entries that call for flavored (regular or sugar-free) as well as unflavored gelatin.
Send us your ever-popular salads-both sweet and savory. Additions might include apples, berries, peaches, pears, grapes, melons, mandarin oranges, crushed pineapple or a mix of fruits. Or perhaps you stir in creamy rich flavor with whipped topping, whipped cream, sour cream, cream cheese, ice cream or sherbet.
Do you take an eye-catching layered gelatin salad to the neighborhood picnic or church dinner that always steals the show? Enter your recipe-it could make you a prize-winner!
Ladies’ luncheon treats like mini molded shrimp salads, springtime chicken salad and tomato aspic are just a few examples of savory gelatin ideas. Be sure to submit your tasty version.
Our judges are already eager to sample some wonderful desserts. Most of us never outgrow our love for smooth, creamy gelatin-based pies, tarts, mousse and other cool treats.
Check your recipe file for that family-pleasing poke cake or creamy pumpkin or fruit torte. And let us know if you’ve given a new twist to a brightly hued crown-jewel dessert or broken-glass parfait.
Also share fun-to-eat gelatin snacks, specialty candies and molded appetizers. After all, when it comes to Jell-O, everyone’s a kid at heart!
In addition to your recipe, please include a little about its origins and any helpful tips for preparing and serving gelatin dishes.
The deadline for entering this contest is November 1, 2005. Winners will be printed in the May/June 2006 issue.
Enter today so you don’t forget (like some of us forget to add the fruit before the gelatin sets up)!
