Fun-loving friends Jamie Bare, Becky James, Kirsten Wright, Brooke Kemp and Nikkala Stephens weave creativity into every part of their lives. Here we talk about the blog they hatched together, The Crafting Chicks (thecraftingchicks.com).

CW: How did you all meet and decide to start blogging?

Chicks: The Crafting Chicks started four years ago when Jamie and Becky invited friends to share their crafty projects on a little blog so we could exchange ideas. We connected in random ways—as neighbors, cousins, college roommates or through our husbands. It wasn’t until 2010 that we all met each other for the first time.

CW: How has your blog evolved, and what challenges and rewards has it brought you?

Chicks: In the beginning, there were about 20 of us contributing to the blog. Eventually we became a core group of five. Sometimes, working together is a huge blessing. Other times, getting five women to make up their minds about something on a daily basis can prove tricky. We do love the friendships we’ve made while blogging and the supportive community we belong to.

CW: What kind of relationship do you have with your followers and what projects have been their favorites?

Chicks: Our readers love projects that have clear instructions. Whether it’s a recipe, refinishing furniture or making a craft, we try to give step-by-step tutorials. There’s nothing worse than seeing a fantastic project, but having no idea where to begin.

Two of our most popular posts are Angry Birds Cupcakes and Rick Rack Rosettes.

CW: If you had to pick just one crafting tool to take to a desert island, which one would it be?

Chicks: Becky would make sure she had her paper cutter and Cricut with her. And Nikkala is pretty sure the computer is her favorite tool.

CW: When it comes to dreaming up new crafting tutorials, are five heads better than one?

Chicks: Each of us has different strong points to bring to the table. Most of the time, we plan our tutorials individually. But we do enjoy bouncing ideas off each other, sharing tips and introducing the latest craft products we’ve discovered.

If we lived closer, we would definitely craft together more often. Although we all live in Utah, we’re spread out with two hours between the farthest apart.

CW: How do you balance family with blogging?

Chicks: Something we all agree on is that family is our number one priority. There are 17 kids between the five of us, so there’s always something going on that demands our quality time. Luckily, our load is lighter than it would be if we were each trying to blog alone.

As a team, someone is usually available to pick up the slack when sick babies, ball games, volunteering at school and other mom duties keep us away from blogging.

CW: Besides being smashing crafters, what other talent can each of you claim?

Chicks: Kirsten is a professional photographer and plays the mini harmonica, Brooke is a whiz at Photoshop and digital scrapbooking, Jamie dreams up craft projects in her sleep, Becky has a knack for memorizing and recalling song lyrics and Nikkala is really good at ping-pong.
