Busy blogger Desirée Campbell is a mom times four, thrifty shopper, fabric fan, paintbrush’s best friend and confirmed makeover believer. She seldom meets a DIY home decor, sewing or upcycling project she doesn’t love. Here we chat with Desirée to learn more about her blog, The 36th Avenue (the36thavenue.com).

CW: How did you discover your creativity and crafting ability?

Desirée: I was born and raised in a house of hairdressers. Oh my! Since I was a girl, I was inspired by the amazing hair transformations that my mother and sisters did. Instead of beauty makeovers, I do home improvements. Instead of coloring and cutting hair, I paint walls and cut paper and fabrics. Instead of using a hair dryer, I use a glue gun. I don’t own a salon, but I do blog—interacting with other real women who love sharing their creativity as much as I do.

CW: How has your blog changed since you started? What surprises, challenges or rewards has it brought you?

Desirée: The 36th Avenue started as a window to the outside DIY world and now has become a full-time job for me. I’m rewarded by the connections and friendships I’ve made through my blog. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy meeting and getting to know other people.

CW: What kind of relationships do you have with your followers? What posts or subjects have proven most popular?

Desirée: I don’t believe people follow me as much as they walk side by side on my avenue. I think of my readers as new friends—people I enjoy hanging out with, sharing moments and having fun.

My readers like simple tutorials that inspire them without being overwhelming. Popular posts include a Peg Board and Accessories Station (I made it so my sweet husband wouldn’t have to put up with my jewelry all over the place), my Dollar Store Flower Soap Ball (a perfect accessory for my powder room) and Kitchen Towel Pillowcases (my daughters helped me stitch them).

CW: How did you come up with the name of your blog—The 36th Avenue?

Desirée: Growing up in Europe, I truly enjoyed walking along old avenues, looking at window displays and sitting in cafes and visiting with people I’d never met before. I envisioned my blog as one of those avenues…a place people could visit with me, meet other great bloggers and enjoy displays of color, creativity and inspiration. Since I launched my blog just before my 36th birthday, I gave it that number.

CW: Do you dream up and work on your projects right at home?

Desirée: I’m a home type of girl. Tons of my projects are kid-friendly, and I love creating things with and for my children. I think we all know we can fly—but in my case, my family gave me the wings to do it. Therefore, there is no place like home!
