An at-home mom married to her college sweetheart, Jessica Fediw fills her house with wall-to-wall creativity. Being a military wife, she’s happy her crafty hobbies (sewing, crocheting, photography and more) are portable as her little family travels. Here we chat with Jessica to learn more about her blog, Happy Together (happytogethercreates.com), and how she got started with crafting.

CW: How did you get into creative crafting using all sorts of fun media? Why did you launch a blog?

Jessica: My grandmother, who sewed and crocheted, and my grandfather, a woodworker, got me interested, and my first child was my muse as an adult. When I started making things for her, I retaught myself the basics of many crafts and continued to learn as much as I could. I took a leap and started a blog during a time my husband’s military career had him traveling. It helped me connect with other women who enjoy the same things I do, and it’s been a fun ride ever since.

CW: How has your blog changed since you started? What surprises, challenges or rewards has it brought you?

Jessica: I have kept all of the posts I’ve ever done, so anyone can go back to the beginning and see how much I’ve grown creatively. Blogging has introduced me to so many amazing people and has helped me find myself as well. I had no idea all this was in me!

CW: What kind of relationship do you have with your followers? What posts or subjects have proven most popular?

Jessica: I try to give my blog a personal feel with the primary focus on craft projects. Having two little ones, it’s hard to respond to every comment, but I try to answer personal emails, even if it takes me a few days.

My readers tell me sewing projects are their favorites. So many asked me how I made Double-Sided Fabric Headbands for my daughter’s teachers, I devoted a post to it. Another “hit” coincided with my oldest learning her ABCs—my Rag Quilt Letters tutorial. When friends had a baby boy, my Cozy Football Blanket was born.

CW: How do you balance blogging with being a busy wife and mother?

Jessica: It can be very easy to get caught up in the blogging world, but I have learned how to keep it from ruling my life. I generally give my days to my family and take some time at night for me—photo editing, blogging and crafting. My present goal is to do three posts a week. I go by that quote “You can do it all, just not all at one time.”
