Camilla Fabbri is a stay-at-home mother of two with a creative streak a mile wide. Her projects are kid-friendly, thrifty and green, and her goal is to make family life more fun. Here we talk with Camilla about her blog Family Chic (cfabbridesigns.com).
CW: How did you get started with crafting and blogging?
Camilla: I probably got my crafty side from my mom. While shopping, she would pick up an item, study it and a few days later, she’d make it. I’d like to think I have her “I-can-make-that” attitude too. My husband is the one who convinced me to start blogging. He’s very savvy about social media and set me up with a website design.
CW: How has your blog changed as it’s developed?
Camilla: Over the past four years, my list of followers has grown from my original dozen—all friends and family. Since then, I’ve been asked to contribute my ideas to TV, magazines and other blogs, and I’m incredibly grateful. Some opportunities take me outside of my comfort zone—like when I did a local news show segment. I was nervous, so I just imagined my blog readers behind the camera.
CW: What kind of relationship do you have with your followers, and what projects are most popular with them?
Camilla: My followers are lovely people—encouraging and supportive. I figure most are busy moms looking for a quick project to add a little fun to their day. So I deliver my instructions simply with plenty of photos.
I get a great response to projects that have a surprise element. Like the one that, at first glance, looks like a porcelain vase, but turns out to be a cup with a balloon stretched over it. Readers also like projects that incorporate humor. A fun one explains how to communicate with kids through small plastic animals.
CW: Which of your many projects are you most proud of?
Camilla: My Moveable Mummies. I use them for Halloween décor, but I’ve had teachers tell me they worked them into a unit on Egyptian history. How great is that?
CW: How do your children get involved in your blogging?
Camilla: Our kids are my best photo models. They also give me great feedback. Often, they work on projects with me, and I ask them for their opinions. When they tell me something is “uncool,” I listen to them.
CW: What’s the most unusual recycled item you’ve transformed into an awesome craft?
Camilla: I made some sculptures out of expired light bulbs. With the growth of eco-friendly bulbs, it’s fun to think that in the future, these crafts might reflect a look back in time.
CW: How do you balance family life with blogging?
Camilla: If I devote three to four hours to blogging, I clear the rest of my day to hang out with my family. When I’m trying to meet a deadline, the perfect balance doesn’t always happen. I try to roll with it, and somehow, it all works out.
