Meet imaginative crafter Natalie Pirveysian, who turns ordinary everyday into magic!
Upcycling blogger Natalie Pirveysian knows you don’t need to clean out the local craft store to make beautiful things. All it takes is seeing everyday objects in a new light. We chatted with Natalie about her blog, Crème de la Craft, (http://www.cremedelacraft.com) and the most unusual item she’s ever used in her DIY projects.
CW: Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started with creative crafting and when did you start blogging about your upcycled creations?
Natalie: I can’t remember a time when crafting wasn’t a part of my life. My mom and I would organize craft projects for my birthday parties and in high school my first job was as a scrapbook instructor at Michaels Arts & Crafts Store.
Over the past few years, I’ve developed a special interest in upcycling objects that might typically be tossed out. I have a huge box of items I’ve collected including empty jars, old T-shirts and wine corks, which can be transformed into some amazing DIY projects. I started blogging to inspire others to embrace a handmade lifestyle.
CW: What changes has your blog undergone since you started and have there been any memorable surprises or rewards it’s brought you?
Natalie: My blog has been evolving since day one. Not only has it changed aesthetically, but I’ve grown creatively as well. The blog has given me opportunities to experiment with more crafting tools, interact with fellow bloggers and share my ideas with people I would have otherwise never known. It’s especially rewarding when I receive photos from readers who have completed one of my DIY projects. I feel like we have a little crafting community from around the world.
CW: What kind of relationship do you have with your readers and what projects have they loved the most?
Natalie: The positive feedback from my readers is what keeps me motivated to continue blogging. Some of my more popular DIY projects have been those that can be easily made by repurposing everyday objects found around the house, including my pillowcase tote bag.
CW: Where do you do your crafting?
Natalie: I love crafting in my backyard. I live in Los Angeles, so luckily the weather is in my favor for the most part. I like to lay out a few newspaper pieces on the patio table and get messy. I’d love to have my own dedicated craft room one day, especially after seeing some pretty inspiring ones on Pinterest that I’ve been swooning over.
CW: What’s the most unusual item you’ve ever recycled into a new treasure?
Natalie: I’ve upcycled quite a few unusual objects, but I would say the most unusual item were pistachio shells (my favorite midnight snack) with which I created an ombré necklace. I’ve worn it quite a few times and always love the reaction on people’s faces when I tell them what it’s made from. It’s definitely not the first item you’ll find in anyone’s craft drawer!
