Radio Daze

I am curious about this beaded doll advertising RCA Radiotron. It’s in very good condition, but missing a card that I heard had rested in the slits in the doll’s hands.

A: By 1930, about a third of all radio programs were sponsored by businesses, and this jointed wood figure, 16 inches tall, was a store display promoting Radio Corporation of America products. Take a look at his hat—that’s a radio tube! Slits in his hands held signs that advertised products.

His bright colors are a tip-off to his designer, Maxfield Frederick Parrish (1870-1966). Parrish, known for his bold use of color, is often considered one of America’s greatest 20th-century painters.

This Radiotron figure is considered a cross-collectible, appealing to collectors of both radio memorabilia and Parrish’s works. Yours, in near-mint condition with decal clarity, little damage and excellent color, is valued at about $850.
